I really enjoyed this book. Paul Collier has taken what is a very complex issue and presented it in a concise view of the situation of the "Bottom Billion" which many of us do not really understand. Collier and his colleagues have done an enormous amount of research and analysis and have distilled that into a compelling read for anyone who worries about what's happening to our world.

To me, the book shed light on the difficulty faced by the "Bottom Billion" and how, with the best of intentions, Aid organisations, the World Bank, IMF, European Union, USA, regional bodies etc can still not achieve an improvement in the lives of these people. The book does not explain concepts too well. It is good for review only, but if you have to learn something its pretty worthless. Also, its big claim is that it follows the order of the FE provided equation book, but I found this claim to simply be false. It seems to go in a random order and decide arbitrarily how many questions to ask for each section.

My book has never came after I made payment. The seller indicated that the payment was received. However, I waited a month and book has never came. I sent quite a few emails to this seller regarding my book, I only got one reply which was at very beginning saying that "book was sent right after the payment was received". And, I never see my book. After I check recent reviews of this person on website again and I found there are quite a few persons have the same experience. I want my money back (even though I doubt it)!!

Don't buy anything from this seller!!!

Iconoclast in the case of the book means One who attacks cherished beliefs. I think most entrepreneurs are good at this. They challenge the known and think creatively.

The following is a summary of Iconoclast from Oct 2008 Fast Company which I think touches most of the salient points:

-- The brain is fundamentally a lazy piece of meat. It doesn't want to waste energy.

-- In order to think creatively, you must develop new neural pathways and break out of the cycle of experience - dependant categorization. As Mark Twain said, "Education consists mainly in what we have unlearned." For most people, this does not come naturally. Among business books Billion-Dollar Lessons is a very well written and accessible view of some important business history. The authors manage to cover a lot of territory, in an engaging way, relying on clear language and a minimum of 'business speak'. They also bring organization to the what they've learned without having to construct a grand theory. This is refreshing, especially from consultant authors. It is possible to learn from business history without trying to reduce the lessons to universal truths.
