The book was of very little help when visiting Venice. Poor maps and confusing information. We had to get local maps and the book was useless.

I'm surprised this book has been rated so highly. It's quite decent, but five out of five stars? Not in my opinion. Giving it three was a bit charitable, but 2.5 wasn't an option.

The author has some nice little diatribes, not even really thinly disguised, against the current administration. I firmly agree with them, but that's not really why I read this book. Those considering moving abroad for such reasons will definitely enjoy the subtle rants, though. There are some good little mini-bios from current expats, including a lengthy one from a young Los Angeles woman in Chengdu, right in the heart of the earthquake mess in Sichuan province, China, so I couldn't help but wonder, "Is she still there?" and "I wonder if she made it through ... I bought this book after finding it through a link somewhere. I'm interested in reading about what singles do to find love (although this is not my situation), and I liked the idea of learning more about Indian culture. This book was a big disappointment, however: in the end, I thought it was trashy.

My husband and I went to New York for Labor Day Weekend and took this book with us everywhere we went. It had helpful information about restaurants and handy subway maps.

Its only problem is its size. It's a little big. You couldn't put it in your pocket, but it fits all right into a large-ish purse.

Rick Steves is the master of travel guides and this book is no exception. Europe Through the Back Door provides you with the insight needed to experience Europe as the Europeans do instead of the typical tourist-y way. In it, Rick discusses traveling with a tour vs with a partner vs alone, how and what to pack, when and where to go, driving vs Eurail train passes vs budget airlines, food and hotel accomodations, money issues, and many more including "Special Concerns" like senior, single women, or gay travelers. Additionally, there's also Part Two, which is the actually "Back Doors" he has been talking about the entire first part. These are places all over Europe where you can get off the beaten path. Travels with Charley is one of my favorite books and one of the few that I have read over and over again. I want here to especially recommend the Gary Sinise reading of the book for Classics on Cassette. Sinise has played and directed in productions of other Steinbeck works, and he reads the book in an engaging manner that I suspect reflects his own love for the book. I have listened to part of the Recorded Books version on CD and enjoyed it far less. I do hope the Gary Sinise version comes out on CD soon.

The USA is just too big to encompass in one book. Most things covered in this book can be found by searching the internet. Good reference.

Good book, well laid out, just overwhelming in the amount of information. I should have keyed into that fact when I saw just how many books there are on the market. This is turning into a full blown research project.
