. Feasting on Asphalt: The River Run
City Travel Guides > Books > Reference and Tips
by: Alton Brown

Unlike Michael Palin, where the books that are companions to his television travels are little treasures that stand on their own, Alto Brown's FEASTING ON ASPHALT: THE RIVER RUN is a bit of a disappointment. Brown, a witty and intelligent host, writes in a style that mirrors his narrative; folksy and smart with many interesting comments. The problem is that they don't really add detail to the already comprehensive series. Padded with photos by fellow "feaster," Jean Claude Dhlen, which while cute, are not exactly artfully composed and recipes that are often approximations of "secret family recipes," a concept I find ridiculous.(What are people afraid will happen to them if the world knew the truth about their doughnuts, fried chicken ... . Getting Out: Your Guide to Leaving America (Process Self-reliance Series)
City Travel Guides > Books > Reference and Tips

I'm surprised this book has been rated so highly. It's quite decent, but five out of five stars? Not in my opinion. Giving it three was a bit charitable, but 2.5 wasn't an option.
The author has some nice little diatribes, not even really thinly disguised, against the current administration. I firmly agree with them, but that's not really why I read this book. Those considering moving abroad for such reasons will definitely enjoy the subtle rants, though. There are some good little mini-bios from current expats, including a lengthy one from a young Los Angeles woman in Chengdu, right in the heart of the earthquake mess in Sichuan province, China, so I couldn't help but wonder, "Is she still there?" and "I wonder if she made it through ... . Roadfood: The Coast-to-Coast Guide to 700 of the Best Barbecue Joints, Lobster Shacks, Ice Cream Parlors, Highway Diners, and Much, Much More
City Travel Guides > Books > Reference and Tips
by: Jane Stern, Michael Stern

I bought this book in the eighties and found it helpful on some road trips. This newer version has little more. Some of these restaurants are no longer good and there are far better ones in an area. The concept is good, but I don't think the Sterns go back to these places to reevaluate and quite frankly I don't think they have added much that's new.

. Where T Go When (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Reference and Tips

Book is very well conceived and the pictures, lay out, details, etc is outstanding. In that respect it is both a great "coffee table" addition or an useful dream or travel tool. Should highlight that the book is not confined to the usual travel destinations, which is a big big plus. With regards to the content which it is not as detailed as someone could expect I will point out that this is not a travel guide but a reference tool which I think does a great job at pointing out the "when" for a variety of travel options. My basic criticism is that although for the most part it does a very good job at explaining the rationale behind why a particular date is recommended for a given location, it does not consistently highlights other suitable periods of the year for ...
