City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong: Why We Love France but Not the French
.Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong: Why We Love France but Not the French
City Travel Guides > Books > Reference and Tips
by: Jean-Benoit Nadeau, Julie Barlow

May 01, 2003
60 Million Frenchman is split into three sections (1) French history (why certain events helped make the French the way they are). (2) French system (detailed analysis of almost every aspect of current--as of 2000--French life). (3) Projections for the future.

I liked part one a lot. I think the chapters on the Algerian War and World War Two were particularly apt in explaining how the French mindset has been shaped in recent decades. Part two was good in spots, and reeeeally boring in spots. For example: first there's a whole chapter on grands ecoles, then, because that was apparently not enough, there was a whole chapter devoted exclusively to ENA. I liked some of the chapters on the political stuff though, and how different the ... Read More:

I worked for Disney in "the Park," selling skulls and snakes in Adventureland-- right next to the Jungle Cruise at the palm-roofed hut that was once called "Tropical Imports." This was during my undergrad years at the University of California (translation: I worked at Disneyland, and I'm smart). I was born in Santa Monica, my parents met during a dance night at Carnation Gardens in Disneyland, and my dad and his wife still have annual passes to the park (translation: in case there was any doubt, I know what I'm taking about), yet I still learned many valuable things from this book; it rocks.

This book is such a contribution! I recommend it to every person who's headed to the park. Buy it and take it with you-- follow the advice. ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Lose Your Mother: A Journey Along the Atlantic Slave Route
.Lose Your Mother: A Journey Along the Atlantic Slave Route
City Travel Guides > Books > Reference and Tips
by: Saidiya Hartman

January 22, 2008
I had to read it for college, and honestly, it was quite redundant. I can summarize it in one sentence:

"They did not accept me when I went to Africa to find my family."

Chapter after chapter go on and on about how lonely she feels in Africa, which seems obvious to me because she has nothing in common with Africans besides her skin color. If I go out and buy a tub of paint and change my skin color, will I have anything in common with her? No. They grew up on different sides of the planet, with totally different governments, economic situations, weather conditions, and culture. What she was searching for was family, and she didn't find it in Africa. Skin color doesn't equate familiarity or a connection.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Under the Tuscan Sun: At Home in Italy

by: Frances Mayes

August 26, 2003
How is it that this even got published? I am a voracious reader, even books I don't really care for I finish just because I want to see what happens in the end. But I just couldn't do it with this one. How can you be so possibly boring?? Have you ever been stuck on the phone with someone who just loves to talk about themselves? You listen, occasionally give a few grunts as acknowledgement, and sigh in relief when they finally run out of words and use for your ear. This book was that, in text form. Frances Mayers needs someone to talk to, I guess no one would listen, so she wrote it all down in book format. If this is all it takes to publish a book, maybe I'll become a writer!

The book is a must read for anyone interested in Mexico City. There are indeed a number of great articles which not only present colorful vignettes of Mexico City but also provide a context that presents them in their historical and cultural place. (e.g. the Moneda street markets in the context of the tianguis tradition and how it's succumb to he mega stores). But there are also quite a few chapters that seem half-written and aimless. The book is good but it could have used an editor, a few more good articles, or both.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : God's Middle Finger: Into the Lawless Heart of the Sierra Madre

City Travel Guides > Books > Reference and Tips
by: Richard Grant

March 04, 2008
Although I enjoyed reading this book I am left feeling a little bit annoyed. I have travelled many times into the areas Richard Grant writes about and have had very different experiences.
We have had picnics at the side of streams high in the Sierras, have sat in the square in San Bernardo drinking beer scores of times, drank whisky on the river bank in Chinipas, drove hundreds of miles on dirt roads and camped in a tent. We even went down into Batopilas on our 1969 Lambretta with our dog in a basket on the back and spent the night down there.
Although I don't dispute what he is saying, I think that there is also another aspect to this beautiful area. If you go to seek out the danger in any part of the world you will find it, whether it's a city ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Maine Atlas & Gazetteer
.Maine Atlas & Gazetteer
City Travel Guides > Books > Reference and Tips
from: DeLorme Publishing

January 01, 2006
I've been camping in Maine for a few weeks... Mainers expect you to have one of these. They say "get out your DeLorme's" not "do you have a map?" Some people I've met have pointed me to the right page without looking at the back.

The details in this atlas are great! All of Maine's public reserve land and campground are clearly marked. If you are trying to do some real camping in some remote areas, get this map. This is a must if you are going to be doing anything outdoors in ME. I never thought I'd say a map is fun to read.
