This is one of the best books on the Anasazi, or ancestral Puebloans, that I have ever read. Rather than being a dry, archeological text, the author hoofs it across the Southwest and Mexico tracking the remains of the ancient ones who migrated there. All of Childs' books feature him on foot exploring places that few dare to tread. This book allows him to get inside the hearts and heads of a people who supposedly vanished over a thousand years ago. A great companion to David Roberts book on the Anasazi.

I bought this book in the eighties and found it helpful on some road trips. This newer version has little more. Some of these restaurants are no longer good and there are far better ones in an area. The concept is good, but I don't think the Sterns go back to these places to reevaluate and quite frankly I don't think they have added much that's new.

The book is a treatise on food and travel.
There are pictures of splendid scenery throughout
the world. For instance, the Sichuan Province is
depicted in full color. The Sunderbans are shown.
They are rice growers in tiger country. Excellent
views of Indonesia, the Balinese life and friendly
people are depicted in breath-taking color.

There is a beautiful scene of the Sarawak River
in a travelogue of Malaysia. The photographer
captured a very realistic picture of a Shanti
village in Ghana. The book would be a perfect
gift for the student in your house.
