I was impressed with this book because most rental managers don't even discuss insurance or know anything about it. Yet, this book devotes several pages on this topic. So, If you got a vacation rental, or thinking about it like me, your common garden variety homeowners policy won't do. You got to pay twice or more on the premium for a vacation home.

I was in Bali last winter and should have gotten this then. I am going again this year and will find some of these wonderful places to see and things to do. We stayed in home stays and ate in warungs. Everything was very reasonable. This guide is really a good thing to have.

In this book, written some 15 years ago as huge parts of the world were coming out of decades of communism, US journalist Kaplan tells of his travels to some of the more troubled spots in the world: West Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, Indochina. His thesis is that huge parts of the world are going through a period of anarchy, or, to put it in another words, they are going to hell. The chapters about Iran and Turkey are surprisingly good (Kaplan bothered himself into learning about the history and politics of these places before going there, and his impressions are reasoned and intelligent); the material about Central Asia is by comparison, extremely poor (he doesn't seem to say there anything except that these countries reeks). Frommer's Thailand 8th Edition is well written, very informative, nicely organized by regions, and I would say a good starting point anyone planning a trip to Thailand. Only weakness my mind is that it tends to emphasis the upscale, very expensive lodging versus the numerous & inexpensive "guest houses" that are quite comfortable and a bargain. Also, would be nice to have color photos representative of each region discussed.

The reviews I read said that White gives the reader a feel for life in New York. Nonsense - the book is vague to the point where it could have been titled, Here is London, or Here is Shanghai. If you want to get a feel for New York, or at least the Bronx where I grew up, read "World Fair" by Doctorow.

Great book and very helpful for our travels. Many of the prices printed were out of date (Hotels, entertainment, etc...) but prices change often so just call and check.

We just took a 12 day trip out west and both Yellowstone and The Grand Tetons were part of our itinerary. I found that this book added nothing to our trip. We also purchased Yellowstone Treasurers by Janet Chapple. This book was excellent and greatly enhanced our enjoyment of the park. She provided some information about areas outside of the park and her coverage of The Grand Tetons was as deep as this book. I would not recommend this book.

"Tourists are learning that the image of the terrible Turk is false, created to a great degree by it unfriendly neighbors. Turks are quick to remind visitors that, surrounded by Syria, Iraq, Iran, Armenia, Georgia, Bulgaria, and Greece, they're not living in Mr. Rogers' neighborhood."

This is a direct quote.

It sounds like they're trying to say that the surrounding countries are painting an incorrect negative image of Turkey. Which is amusing, since he listed both Greece and Armenia there, which were both targeted by Turkey. Either this writing staff has no idea what they're writing and is just happy to sell books, thinking no one will double check the info, or they're Racist and opinionated. How is it that this even got published? I am a voracious reader, even books I don't really care for I finish just because I want to see what happens in the end. But I just couldn't do it with this one. How can you be so possibly boring?? Have you ever been stuck on the phone with someone who just loves to talk about themselves? You listen, occasionally give a few grunts as acknowledgement, and sigh in relief when they finally run out of words and use for your ear. This book was that, in text form. Frances Mayers needs someone to talk to, I guess no one would listen, so she wrote it all down in book format. If this is all it takes to publish a book, maybe I'll become a writer!
