Great book! Just got back from Rome, and got So much use out of it! If you plan on visiting the Vatican and its museums his tips on avoiding the lines really worked! Like sneaking out of the back entrance at the Sistine Chapel into St Peters, the sign said for tour groups only, well no one was going through so we chanced it, and we passed a bunch of security guards and no one stopped us! Also avoiding lines at the colosseum tips worked, we also did some of his tours, they were great, and quite funny! Only thing that was different were some of the prices for tickets such as the Roma Pass, add at least 2-5 euros more than the 2008 book states.

I bought this book for my daughter. She is in Peru, and brought the book with her to use as a guide for everything. I read it first, and it was a great book, it tells you just about everything you need to know, and bring when you travel to Peru. I highly recommend this book,it is one of the best books on Peru!

I was impressed enough by INTO THIN AIR, his '97 account of the previous year's Everest climbing disaster, that picking up a used copy of EIGER DREAMS was a done deal. I didn't pay enough attention when buying it, however( at a local used bookstore) to learn that it was a compilation of climbing-related stories he'd previously published in 'Outside', 'New Age Journal' and 'Smithsonian'. I have nothing special against collections of previously published work. If I haven't read the material, what's the difference? But, as a writer myself, they always make me nervous somehow. Maybe it's the image of the writer badgering his agent about getting the cash flow flowing again and the agent placating him with, 'Why not pick some stories that aren't doing ... Read More:

I used this book only in Beijing and Shanghai, so I can only vouch for those two sections. The maps of Beijing were great, when they were there. Because the book appears not to have been copy edited, there are lots of references to more detailed maps there are not actually in the book.

Also, the Beijing section doesn't include some of the most interesting areas for tourists to visit. It seems like someone just did a google search on Beijing and listed the first few things that come up, regardless of their interest or relevance to tourists. A major park walking distance to the forbidden city surrounded by cafes, museums and excellent souvenir shops is simply not listed.

Shanghai was a little better.

We live outside of NYC in Stamford, CT and we head into the city about every other weekend. We love go out to eat and so we're ALWAYS carrying around this book (its small enough to fit in a medium sized purse) and reffering to the book to get an idea of price, atmosphere, location, etc. I refer to the book at least once a week to find out more information about a place....its the only place I look for reviews and it has basically become the only place I look for ideas on places to go! If its not in Zagat, usually I'm not interested in going!! Most of the times its for dinners, but I've looked it up a few times for lunch/bars too. We have both books, the 1000 Places to Go Before You Die and this book. This one is much better, because it focuses much more on experiences rather than shopping and staying at fancy hotels. The other book seems like half advertising. Sure, the experiences might not all be my cup of tea. I won't be doing any extreme sports, and I won't be partying now that I am a mom. However, there is something for everybody, the pictures are compelling and the descriptions are opinionated, evocative and short.

I have yet to put the phrases to use but I feel more confident already...the phonetic pronunciation guides are very clear. The humor and variety make the book easy to read and become familiar with. Thanks also for the hints on manners and realistic expectations.
