This book is a good reminder of how the bottom of the bottom billion survive, and the importance of a minimal level of governance. Nonetheless, the author overdoes the comparisons with pre-independence Congo. Although the colonial masters undoubtedly lived well, life was far from a bed or roses for the masses--the fact that Belgium invested so little in basic services for the Congolese, is one reason the country is still a mess, even as many African countries are now rapidly advancing.

I was impressed enough by INTO THIN AIR, his '97 account of the previous year's Everest climbing disaster, that picking up a used copy of EIGER DREAMS was a done deal. I didn't pay enough attention when buying it, however( at a local used bookstore) to learn that it was a compilation of climbing-related stories he'd previously published in 'Outside', 'New Age Journal' and 'Smithsonian'. I have nothing special against collections of previously published work. If I haven't read the material, what's the difference? But, as a writer myself, they always make me nervous somehow. Rolf's other book, Vagabonding, is a must-have guide for anyone interested in travel, regardless of age, intended destination, length of trip, or particular travel philosophy. It's been like a travel bible to me, passing it on to friends and family young and old to help explain why it is I enjoy travel so much, and hoping they catch the bug too.

So it was with great interest I picked up Rolf's second book, Marco Polo Didn't Go There. First, this book is different from Vagabonding -- it's not really a practical travel guide. Mayle's vision of Provence is mostly fantasy. It's true, the details of food and weather and habits are accurate, but it rings of 19th century English colonial patriarchy. The French "peasants" are portrayed like happy go lucky children living in a Romanticized garden of Eden uncorrupted by the real world of London and Paris. Mayle is the benevolent Patriarch in contrast to the towns cast of cartoonish personalities (it's no accident this book was adapted to a comedic TV series). If it was a novel at least there would be a plot, but instead it's a faux anthropological survey with Mayle studying the life and habits of local natives and imparting information for those back home who wish to follow his colonial ambitions (Mayle was in advertising). Lots of great recipes. I've already made "Tony Roma's Ribs" twice. The recipe includes how to make the BBQ sauce, as well as the preparation methods. They were just as tender and tasted just as good the ribs that we have eaten at Tony Roma's restaurants.

Can't wait to try a few other recipes!

This book is a great gift idea for someone who is a repeat visitor to Walt Disney World. It is not a general list of hidden mickeys, like hiddenmickeys.org, but is instead a game that you can play with others in your group.

Included are game rules for "Scavenger Hunt" and "non-Scavenger Hunt". Buy multiple books, and you can compare your Scavenger Hunt scores at the end of the day. You can also play non-Scavenger Hunt with your kids (or by yourself) while waiting in line. The book is easy to store in your pocket.

If you want to play Scavenger Hunt and don't have enough books, you can always purchase additional books (at full price, of course) in the parks.
