.Rick Steves' France: Belgium & the Netherlands 1997 (Annual) City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves by: Rick Steves, Steve Smith 1997-02 I first used Rick Steves' France book in 1993, and after buying a dozen different books about travel in Paris and France, I still find THIS book the most concise, fun, and helpful France travel resource! I expecially love his recommendation of the Rue Cler district as the place to stay in Paris. As Rick so eloquently says, "Rue Cler, a villagelike pedestrian street, is safe, tidy, and makes me feel like I must have been a poodle in a previous life......Living here ranks with the top museums as one of the city's great experiences." Rue Cler is an indoor/outdoor street market of friendly gastronomic stores (cooked and raw foods), flower shops, and fine friendly restaurants. My wife and I will not travel in Europe without one of Rick Steves' books! Specifically, the Ireland book provided us with some useful guidelines for each day of our trip. Some we followed completely, many we tailored for our own interests. You can't see it all in a week or ten days, so Rick Steves' helps you hit the high spots, find some comfortable and friendly places to stay, and avoid the tourist traps. He doesn't cover every place that I'm interested in visiting, but those places that he does cover are done in an interesting and useful way. When someone likes to travel like me, it is an opportunity to experience deeply local issues thatb other wise would tend to be hidden from the first time around tourist. For this reason I totally disagree on the fact that the author tends to summarize Portugal and Spain, two of the oldest countries in Europe, therefore with totaly different aspects and much to say about, in one single book. On the educational side, it is misleading for most people does not know where Portugal is and considers it part of Spain.
