. Rick Steves' Spain & Portugal 1999 (Serial)
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves
1999-03
This book is great for what it tries to be: an easy and concise resource to guide you through a 3 week tour of Spain and Portugal. He confidently steers you to the major and minor (though equally fun and interesting) attractions with his star system, and suggests good budget hotels and eateries (show the book to a few hotels and get a 10% discount). His descriptions about prices and schedules are accurate. While we heartily recommend the book, it must be used to supplement another, more detailed guidebook (we used Lonely Planet). Other critiques: (1) his indifference towards the Gaudi architecture scene in Barcelona, which were among our favorite sights; (2) his fast and furious pace (needs more down time); and (3) meager explanations ... . Rick Steves' Great Britain 2005
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves
2004-12
This "tourism porn" is more like watching a cooking show than reading a cookbook, meaning it was great inspiring fun to sit back and see the sites as our always affable host traveled across Britain, but deep down this DVD wasn't a lot of help when it came to planning my trip. Oh, I recommend it, sure, it's great to watch, I love Rick Steves, but as far as assisting the planning of a vacation... Hence my cooking show/cookbook comparison up there. His actual guidebooks, however, are invaluable!

. Rick Steves' France 2005
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves, Steve Smith
2004-12
Steves ignores too many important cities, and I was shocked to see him refer to Beaune but not Dijon, and not even mention Nancy or Metz.
It is an userfriendly guide and he offers excellent itineraries, but the book is based on a single person's opinions and views (which explains his casual manner for excluding/including cities). Don't let this be your only guidebook in France, but it is handy to have in conjunction with others. I enjoyed the easy reading and the honest recommendations and it isn't as weighty as the Lonely Planet or bland as Fodor's. But, I am still shocked that Steves completely ignored a number of France's great and beautiful provincial cities.

. Rick Steves' Ireland 2004
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves
2003-12
We used the 2003 version of this book for our trip in May 2003. My wife and I will not travel in Europe without one of Rick Steves' books! Specifically, the Ireland book provided us with some useful guidelines for each day of our trip. Some we followed completely, many we tailored for our own interests. You can't see it all in a week or ten days, so Rick Steves' helps you hit the high spots, find some comfortable and friendly places to stay, and avoid the tourist traps. He helped us get the most for our money in Ireland.

. Rick Steves' Italy 1998 (Serial)
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves
1998-03
I'm an American who's been living in various cities in Europe for the last 2 years. Rick Steve's has NEVER led me wrong in all my travels. My visiting guests and I simply refer to him as 'The God of Travel' or just 'Rick'. Whether it's which sights to pass on with limited time to the most unique 'back door' hotels or pensions. His guides are funny, frank and to the point. If piles of historical text is what you're looking for, you won't find it here. This is no huge book to haul along with you. It's all you need to educate yourself on the sights of Europe. Each section begins with a quick overview of the city or area and with great bits of information you'd not get from the encyclopedia. I have almost all of his 'regional' books ... Read More:
