. Rick Steve's Spain & Portugal 1998 (Serial)
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves
1998-01
I just returned from a trip to Spain, accompanied by Rick Steves and Lonely Planet. Rick's book was a disappointment, for I do enjoy his television series on PBS. The book was very weak on any type of usable maps or directions to important sites, which is mandatory in Spain. I found his warnings on the dangers of Morocco, especially Moroccan cuisine, to be unwarranted and a detriment to our enjoyment of our day in Morocco. We tried a couple of restaurants he recommended, without success, and switched to Lonely Planet's recommendations for the remainder of the trip if we needed help. His commentary is always enjoyable but the concrete information you need to find your way around is definitely lacking.

. Rick Steves' Spain 2005

2004-09
I spent three months in the summer of 2005 working in Madrid, and as a longtime fan of Rick Steves' travel show "Europe Through the Back Door" on PBS, I bought his Spain 2005 guidebook to accompany me on my weekend trips in and around Madrid, as well as on long-distance treks to Santiago de Compostela and Barcelona.
The book focuses on destinations such as Madrid, Barcelona, Santiago, Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada and the Costa del Sur, offering a range of dining and lodging options to suit all tastes and budgets. Rick includes walking tours, hand-drawn maps to locate dining and hotel listings, and a liberal dose of humour and Spanish culture.
Nearly all of my reservations on trips were from Rick's recommendations: in Santiago, ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' Scandinavia 1998 (Rick Steves' Scandinavia, 1998)

1998-01
When my wife and I visited Scandinavia, we did some background research, but this is the only book we brought with us. Unlike the encyclopedia of travel books like Lonely Planet or Rough Guide (although I don't know if they have editions specific to Scandinavia Scandinavia) which inundate you with plethora of choices that are written with little or no bias, Rick Steves sifts through the myriad of information with his own (somewhat opinionated) taste, and only picks out sights you want to see, restaurants you want to eat, and places you want to stay; and recites only from his own experiences, adding credibility to the information he provides. The prices in my edition (I think it was a '96 edition) were off by 5-10% (on the downside, of course), ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' Germany, Austria & Switzerland 1998 (Serial)
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves
1998-01
If you are going to Europe hoping to find that Germany consists of Neuschwanstein, oompah bands, and wurst, Switzerland is all Heidi, cheese, and chocolate, and Austria the Sound of Music personified, you might find this guide useful. I have found that there are a lot of American travelers who take this approach to international travel, and the book will definitely guide you toward these experiences. On my fifth visit to the region, however, I wanted to appreciate the variety of these countries, and I was struck by the limitations of Steves' approach. I will admit that my budget was what originally motivated me to buy the book, but I found that I got more bang for my buck by asking locals where to stay or eat - although I have to ... Read More:
