. Rick Steves' Ireland 2004
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves
2003-12
We used the 2003 version of this book for our trip in May 2003. My wife and I will not travel in Europe without one of Rick Steves' books! Specifically, the Ireland book provided us with some useful guidelines for each day of our trip. Some we followed completely, many we tailored for our own interests. You can't see it all in a week or ten days, so Rick Steves' helps you hit the high spots, find some comfortable and friendly places to stay, and avoid the tourist traps. He helped us get the most for our money in Ireland.

. Rick Steves' Pocket Travel Journal (Rick Steves)

Rick Steves' did it again. This book is a great guide for seeing the main areas of France, Belgium and the Netherlands. I stayed in one of the B&B's and a hotel he recommended for Brugge, and they both were everything he said. The information on Paris is exact and helpful, especially the way he separates Paris into three maps. The hotel prices for all countries are right on the money, even in the busy season. One of the best things about this book, is that he always includes helpful information; i.e. how to use the phones; where the tourist info. is; the approximate exchange rates, etc. I love his books and never go traveling without them.

. Rick Steves' Rome 2004
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves, Gene Openshaw
2003-10
... and the maps are worthless.
Two examples of the many glaring inaccuracies contained in this book:
1) Rick claims you can pick up a bus map in any tourist information kiosk. The following is an actual transcript of our conversation with the tourist info lady:
us: buon giorno. do you speak english?
info lady: of course.
us: we'd like to go to Vatican city. may we have a bus map please?
info lady: a bus map? for Roma?
us: um, yes.
info lady: no such thing exists.
2) Rick claims you can see everything you want to see in the Vatican in one morning: St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel - everything. Um, Rick? Have you ever BEEN there? Did you notice the 40,000 ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' Germany, Austria & Switzerland 1998 (Serial)
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves
1998-01
If you are going to Europe hoping to find that Germany consists of Neuschwanstein, oompah bands, and wurst, Switzerland is all Heidi, cheese, and chocolate, and Austria the Sound of Music personified, you might find this guide useful. I have found that there are a lot of American travelers who take this approach to international travel, and the book will definitely guide you toward these experiences. On my fifth visit to the region, however, I wanted to appreciate the variety of these countries, and I was struck by the limitations of Steves' approach. I will admit that my budget was what originally motivated me to buy the book, but I found that I got more bang for my buck by asking locals where to stay or eat - although I have to admit that ... . Rick Steve's Spain & Portugal 1998 (Serial)
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves
1998-01
I just returned from a trip to Spain, accompanied by Rick Steves and Lonely Planet. Rick's book was a disappointment, for I do enjoy his television series on PBS. The book was very weak on any type of usable maps or directions to important sites, which is mandatory in Spain. I found his warnings on the dangers of Morocco, especially Moroccan cuisine, to be unwarranted and a detriment to our enjoyment of our day in Morocco. We tried a couple of restaurants he recommended, without success, and switched to Lonely Planet's recommendations for the remainder of the trip if we needed help. His commentary is always enjoyable but the concrete information you need to find your way around is definitely lacking.
