I really liked the pronunciation guides and the phrases, but i had difficulty finding the specific words that I wanted. For example, I couldn't look at a restaurant menu and then look in this book and figure out what my food options were. Probably works better for a touristy trip, than my permanent move.

We used this book in Copenhagen, Helsinki, and Tallinn instead of booking an expensive shore excursion on our Baltic cruise. Excellent tips and walking tours. We saw and learned things the tour groups didn't cover. also great to find local post offices and internet cafes. We don't leave home without Rick Steve!!!

Yes, as the prior review mentions, the road info may not be accurate... but there's a lot more to this book. I live in Lisbon and recommend it to all our visitors as it has excellent info on making your way through Sintra, Belém, Tavira, etc. If you're a first-time visitor looking for insider-type tips on the "highlights" of Portugal, this book is worth considering. (It is limited to a few key Portuguese cities/sites, so don't expect an overview of everything in this beautiful country.)

This book proved an invaluable tool whilst my mom and I were in the Cote d'Azur. It gave excellent information regarding buses (including numbers and cost) and allowed us to travel easily between towns along the Cote d'Azur. Also included were locations of Travel Information offices where we were able to obtain additional bus schedules and maps. This is the only book you'll need for the Cote d'Azur. Maps, tips, walking tours, all excellent!

This is a great high-level roadmap of Germany, but it lacks the detail needed to really explore the countryside. If you are driving through Germany like we did, buy an atlas that provides more route detail. There are so many country lanes in Germany that even a detail book sometimes misses the many villages you'll encounter along the way. If you're taking the train, this map works fine. If you're driving, look at something else.

Having been to Italy six times already, I was not sure if this travel guide would help much. I ordered it because we will be spending over three weeks in the Tuscany area. The book is more than worth the price with just the "behind the scenes" information that Rick provides you. Plus I utilized his suggestion for the B&B we will be staying at in Volterra, Italy. The only negative thing about the book is that it made me want to leave now...not next May

Rick Steves is sort of a hero of mine. I enjoy his programs on PBS.
He does sometimes tend to oversimplify travel and now languages. The real problem with Rick is that he can't speak languages, admits that he can't and then he goes on to write books about how to speak them.
Still, the 'blind leading the blind' has its advantages. Rick knows what works for a 'tongue tied American' and therin lies the advantage.
You will never learn to speak Spanish with this book alone. It is a guide that will help you.
I have gotten excellent results using Behind the Wheel Spanish 8 CDs

Even though Steves claims he is always updating these books, there were a lot of things had changed. My suspicion is that very little is updated each year. Some information was not accurate. Overall I wasn't too impressed with his recommendations. I suppose it is a good resource for someone who has no idea about what to expect. Next time I will make friends with locals and let him or her show me around.

Any book that tells you how to say "May i give you a back massage" and "I dont have any diseases" in three different languages is definatly worth buying it. Also it has the basics and maybe the more useful phrases like "where is the bathroom" "check please" and the like.

I purchased this book last year before our 4 week trip to France. This book is interesting and informative. I especially liked the travel tips and recommendations for accomodations outside of Paris. The two places that we enjoyed staying the most I found in this book. Definitely check out this book!
