. Rick Steves' Spanish & Portuguese Phrase Book & Dictionary

1999-05
This is a handy, up-to-date helper for people traveling on the Iberian peninsula. More than Northern European countries, some knowledge of the local language is necessary in Iberia. (Actaully, I'm speaking only from personal knowledge of Spain; I didn't travel in Portugal.) The book is divided into sections, including "Basics", "Numbers, Time & Money", "Sleeping", "Eating", "Transportation", "Sightseeing, Shoping & Entertainment", "Phoning, E-mail, Post Office & Red Tape", "Health", "Help" and "Chatting". The e-mail section both tells you how to get directions to a nearby internet cafe and translates operation terms that may appear ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' Paris 2005
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves, Steve Smith, Gene Openshaw
2004-11
This is probably an adequate enough guide for a first time visitor, or for someone who has never made it out of Weehauken, New Jersey before, and is travelling on a student, or barely post-student budget.
But beyond setting out the basic tours from Paris 101, the book is really, really skimpy on hotel and restaurant recommendations, and really, really heavy on flakking Rick Steves' products and tours.
If you buy just one guide, there are many better choices.

. Rick Steves' Russia & the Baltics (Rick Steves' Russia and the Baltics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves, Ian Watson
1998-01
We felt like we wasted our money on this guide. The authors tried to cover too much ground in one book -- in doing so, the reader is left with a feeling that the info is incomplete and inadequate. We did not visit Latvia or Lithania, but we did see some of Moscow and St. Petersburg before taking the Finnish Sibelius train to Helsinki. We also visited Tallinn, Estonia by Silja's wonderful "Super Seacat IV" ferry. (The two of us traveled on our own -- avoiding the tour groups.) Russia/Finland/Estonia is a wonderful trip to for younger and older adults (leave the small kids at home). The title of the book is somewhat misleading, as the authors focus on and cram Helsinki, Tallinn, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vilnius, and Riga into 138 pages. Page ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door 2004: The Travel Skills Handbook
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves
2003-09
Rick Steves is the master of travel guides and this book is no exception. Europe Through the Back Door provides you with the insight needed to experience Europe as the Europeans do instead of the typical tourist-y way. In it, Rick discusses traveling with a tour vs with a partner vs alone, how and what to pack, when and where to go, driving vs Eurail train passes vs budget airlines, food and hotel accomodations, money issues, and many more including "Special Concerns" like senior, single women, or gay travelers. Additionally, there's also Part Two, which is the actually "Back Doors" he has been talking about the entire first part. These are places all over Europe where you can get off the beaten path. Rick has been to all these places and they are his favorites ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' France 2006 (Rick Steves)

What I like about Rick Steves guides is that, unlike his competitors, they are filled with personal observations with clear recommendations of what to see and experience. The writing is more personal and not clinical as with the other guidebooks. My wife & I recently traveled to Europe (London, Paris & Rome) and Rick Steves books were the only guides we used or needed for the entire trip!
Four clear advantages:
1. Rick points out exactly what neighborhoods to stay in - this is huge, because the choice of location can make or break your stay especially when you are on a tight timeline. E.g. Rick suggests staying in the Rue Cler neighborhood in Paris - and it was the perfect location - easy access to the metro, most sights within walking distance, and ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' Rome 2006 (Rick Steves)

I just returned from Italy where I used this book practically as a bible while in Rome. Having used other travel books around the world, I really enjoyed and appreciated how Rick Steves organizes his book and provides you with just the right amount of detail and direction to make the most out of your trip.
Only having four days in Rome, his book helped me see the major sites, avoid long lines and make the best of a short trip. I recommend reading the recommended 'tours' the evening before to help you plan your attack. It was great to be able to wander through the Forum, book in hand and hit the highlights while understanding the magnificance of the place.
The way the tours are grouped are fabulous. I really felt like I saw the best that Rome had ... Read More:
