. Rick Steves' Florence and Tuscany 2005
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves, Gene Openshaw
2004-10
The choice is clear...buy this book or regret not buying it.
I had been to Florence many, many years ago. Everything is still where it was, but times have changed. We indeed live in a different world, a different time, different circumstances, and a different economy. No more Italian lira. It's the power of the euro now. Things simply cost more. Business is business, scams are scams, good deals are good deals, and bad deals are bad deals.
Security is heavy and tight in many of the museums. These are, after all, icons of civilization and a religious society and history. Bags will be checked, metal detectors are in use, you will empty your pockets, and you will be scanned. In spite of a highly visible police force, thieves, gangs, ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' Great Britain 2007 (Rick Steves)

This is a guidebook for people of moderate/limited means and limited time who want to see the major sites. In a city like London, you'll have to pick and choose which things you want to see, and he groups the sites together into easy self-guided walks that maximize what you can see in a day.
There are many lovely things which are left out including one of my personal favorites: Highgate cemetery. Highgate has amazing monuments and architecture ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' Paris 2002
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves, Steve Smith, Gene Openshaw
December 10, 2001
It is refreshing to read a travel guidebook that is devoid of hundreds of hotel and restaurant listings and concentrates mainly on the principal attractions of a city. Rick Steves' book Paris 2002 published by Avalon Travel Publishing can be described as having a tour guide at your personal disposal. The author presents a very brief introduction dealing with the general topics of when to go, trip costs, exchange rates, etc. This is in sharp contrast to many of the guides that devote too many pages to these details. You sometimes get the feeling that some of these authors are trying to fill up the pages. Immediately after the introductory chapter Reeves gives us the global picture in his "Orientation" chapter. In other words, the author tells us this ... Read More:
