. Rick Steves' Paris 2002
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves

It is refreshing to read a travel guidebook that is devoid of hundreds of hotel and restaurant listings and concentrates mainly on the principal attractions of a city. Rick Steves' book Paris 2002 published by Avalon Travel Publishing can be described as having a tour guide at your personal disposal. The author presents a very brief introduction dealing with the general topics of when to go, trip costs, exchange rates, etc. This is in sharp contrast to many of the guides that devote too many pages to these details. You sometimes get the feeling that some of these authors are trying to fill up the pages. Immediately after the introductory chapter Reeves gives us the global picture in his "Orientation" chapter. . Rick Steves' Germany, Austria and Switzerland, 2001

Germany, Austria, and Switzerland Rick Steves I like Rick Steves' travel philosophy, which is basically not to stay in hotels, pack a lunch, and travel frugally. There is some good information in this book. It helped us several times on a trip to Germany and Austria. The coverage about the Mittelrhein is informative. I liked Steves' map of the castles between Koblenz and Bingen. Largely due to his coverage of the town of Bacharach, we spent two nights there. We were not alone. I actually saw a tourist walking down the street with a copy of this book in his hand. One place offering lodging had a sign out front about being mentioned in this book. Despite these things, Bacharach is a charming town, where one can walk everywhere or ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' Italy 2005
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves

2004-10
This guidebook, while thorough in the cities it covers, should not be called an "Italy" guidebook. Entire regions, as well as Sicily, are left out, and only the most famous of the popular tourist towns are covered. The constant reminders about theft, the difficulties of driving, the traffic, the crowds, almost made me forget why I was going to Italy. The guidebook might be best for the more timid or first-time traveler who only wants the main sights in the main places, not for the traveler who hopes to experience something out of the ordinary. For travelers looking for more depth I would suggest the Lonely Planet Italy guidebook.

. Rick Steves' Scandinavia 2006 (Rick Steves)

This is definitely not a comprehensive country guide, and it doesn't mean to be. Rather it is a collection of around 6 to 8 major places of interest in Scandinavia... it's really a "Detailed Guide to select Scandinavia Highlights". The places that Rick does cover, such as; Stockholm, Bergen, Copenhagen, the Norway Fjords, Helsinki, etc. are covered very well and to a superior degree than the A to Z books like Lonely Planet and Rough Guides. Neither is "better" than the other, and really they should be used in conjunction with one another.
What Rick does really well is take some travel option that would be listed in any other book as a one sentence listing like "Travel: ... Cruises: Stockholm to Helsinki v/vs 18Hr, 380Kr Db; Daily; Silja and Viking ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' Scandinavia 2002

It seems that Mr. Steves is more concerned about his political views than giving us good travel info, at times. 'Even suitable for a Republican to dine at' and 'Republicans might be shaking from the customs' were a couple of examples (not verbatum) and he criticized Norway's whaling culture, but approved of Denmark's permissive culture toward drugs and sex. Ok, ok...I'll stop my rant. I just was hoping for more travel substance and less politicizing. The book was geared toward the population centers, so you might not get the info outside of the two largest cities in each country...was hoping for more out of the way information. Also, not too much info on driving. Geared more toward rail travel, which is ok and probably better for students traveling ... Read More:
