Edward, it should be noted, was still twitching upon the floor." How can you resist reading more? Eventually I found the character of Lady Julia a bit too Victorian and self obsessed for my taste (barging in on an obviously sick man, ignoring his health and demanding that the inquiries keep progressing, ) but despite that lull half way through the book, by the end I was hooked again. This is a very enjoyable murder mystery set in Victorian London with the death of an Earl and his late wife investigating. .Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 1) City Travel Guides > Books > Romance by: J.R. Ward September 06, 2005 If you are looking for a romance novel this may not be your flavor. If however, you are looking for MORE than a romance novel, a real paranormal novel then this may be for you. J.R. Ward is fantastic in that the characters are 3-dimensional and recur throughout the entire Black Dagger series. These books are grittier (i.e., with language and sex) but much more realistic than the formulaic romance novels. If you like Matrix-like action and tough men you will probably like these books. I thank God for J.R. .No Escape City Travel Guides > Books > Romance by: Shannon K. Butcher October 01, 2008 I've enjoyed her first 2 books though some of the descriptions of violence/torture bothered me. Some romantic suspense is really too much for me. I wont' repeat on the theme but the reader knows who the killer is and knows it's a very close friend. He loves his friends and kills them believing he's saving them from the suffering of their childhoods because he himself is suffering from it.There are a lot of deaths in this book and violence. Even though that part only takes a page or so it has the person crying/begging and some he even has commit suicide with a threat to harm someone they love. This was hard for me to take and I know there are probably other 'wimps' like me who would appreciate a little warning. I did finish the book and think she did a much better job ... At the same time, she weaves largely implausible tales and, almost against the odds, she manages to make them plausible. Finally, her prose is lovely in every way: vocabulary, grammar, style. These virtues that seem to come so easily to Quinn actually are unusual among romance novelists. I'm just glad it was loaned to me, and that I didn't waste my money, just my time. The last time I read something this poorly written, it was "The Bridges of Madison County". .Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways, Book 1) City Travel Guides > Books > Romance by: Lisa Kleypas October 02, 2007 I have read most of Lisa Kleypas's books and I was eager to read Cam's story after being introduced to him in the Devil in Winter. Ms. Kleypas did not disappoint. Cam Rohan is a sexy half-gypsy yearning to find his tribe and be free. That is until he meets the misfit Hathaway clan. There is the drunken/depressed older brother Leo, the all to serious sister, Amelia, fragile Win, brooding gypsy Merripen and even a sister who collects critters. I don't think I realized it was the fourth book in the series when I bought it. (I hate reading a new story in the middle of a series, or in this case, the end?) Although I probably would have bought it anyway because of J.R.'s endorsement on the back. (I'm really going to stop reading books she endorsed; I'm tired of getting burned.) I did not read the first three books in the series, but was able to figure out what was going on pretty quickly. Ms. Dodd did do a good job of providing history on the Wilder family.
