I am traveling to Ireland soon, and found myself in need of a Rough Guide-- because no one else does it better. So far its been instrumental in planning my trip: from arrival in the Southern port cities to a trip around the Ring of Kerry to our planned stay in Dublin, its the starting point in accounting for lodging, restaurants, and activities. No guide can encapsulate the entire country they're "guiding" you through, but the very best give you a great sense of where and how to begin engaging with the country or countries in question and the Rough Guide typically does this with aplomb. I'm surprised by the negative reviews of this book.

While staying in a great hostel (that did happen to be recommended in this book)two of my roommates traveling together begged me to let them keep my Rough Guide To Peru 6. They were carrying Lonely Planet.

Also, while traveling with friends whom I had met carrying different Peru guides (LP included) I always was curious to read how various guides wrote-up a Peru site that I had visited already. With limited exceptions, I felt the Rough Guide to be superior. (I never ran across anyone with a Moon guide and I used them in Costa Rica and was very impressed).

Romania is so rapidly becoming a hip tourist destination that any guide over two years old is sure to be out of date. This guide is no exception. Use it for a crash course in Romania history, culture and geography, but plan to rely on more local sources for the best places to sleep and eat.

This book irritates the hell out of Romanians because it states some painful truths. First, Romania is a poor country. It's a place where "the dollar goes a long way," to quote the overused phrase. And while it's becoming less poor, Romania still lags behind other former Warsaw Pact countries in developing a healthy economy. Don't expect modern conveniences and a cheery service ethic... yet.

I love this guide, very useful, concise, and easy to find information. It also gives names of books we can read before having the great adventure to visit the west of USA. I think I got to know the WEst before being there thanks to this guide.

What a sturdy map that can really take a beating. More importantly, it's easy to read and travels/refolds well. If you've never driven in Portugal, you're in for a treat. Consider yourself warned. This map will be invaluable as you get lost over and over again, wondering where the sign was before you hit the roundabout. This map is comprehensive and easy to follow.

If you're going to Trinidad and Tobago, you simply MUST buy this book. It was a huge help while I was there, and I wouldn't have had nearly as much fun without it. Complete where where to stay, what to do, how to get there, where to catch the Maxis, taxis, etc...it is an incredibly helpful book. If you're going to T&T and not touring the country, you probably won't need a book. But if you want to see what T&T really has to offer, you've gotta pick this book up. I spent 9 days in the country with this book always at my side.

We just returned from Tuscany & Umbria and used a friend's Rough Guide to Tuscany & Umbria 5. It was indispensable! User-friendly and entertaining - plus great recommendations for restaurants, pizza, gelato, etc.
