I've read many a' Rough Guide to a variety of musical forms, and Kurt Wolff's book on country absolutely takes the cake. From the music's hillbilly beginnings to the alt-country offshoots of the '90s, this well-researched book is written with wit and a tender affection for the genre's highlights AND lowlights. I can't imagine a better gift for someone interested in country music. My only gripe: Now that the book is four years old, some of the artist information could use an update. Second edition, Kurt? Please?

This book is typical of all Rough Guides: It a nice chunk of a book with the best balance between pragmatic information and cultural/historical contexts of all travel guides. Dedicated Rough Guides fans already know that you don't buy these books for their glossy photography. You buy them for density of information.

Three things that stand out about this one are:

1) In additional to a 100-page treatment of the capital, the catalog offers unusually dense coverage of the lovely attractions beyond Budapest. If you leave the country without excursions to Sopron, Tihany and Eger, you've missed the essence of Hungary.

The rough guide ot morocco is definitely better than the LP guide in terms of its content. But, this particular book, shipped out from amazon, got binding problems. The 10 or so color pages in the beginning of the book all fell off before I reached Morocco. Lucky enough, the rest of the book was intact for the whole trip, enduring my rough treatment. In any case, it might be better to go without the color pages anyway, because they are just picture bearing no help to the trip and weight a little more than the regular paper.

This book was very handy when we went to Melbourne last month. We bought this and a city guide, and found this book to be much more our style. If all the Rough Guides are this handy, then it's a great series. I am certainly going to try one the next time I am going on a trip. (Usually I buy "for Dummies" books, but since we were strictly relegated to Melbourne on this past trip, I didn't want to buy an all-Australia-oriented book!)

Could have used a bit more data on the seedier aspects of the city (because all cities have their dark side, and it's nice to know the etiquette), but overall, it was very useful.
