I have been travelling for a couple of weeks through Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka using the Rough Guide, together with a friend who had the Lonely Planet to South India. Overall I found the RG a very good guide, both in terms of practical information (maps, transportation, budget hotels) as well as for providing sufficient background information about the temples in that region (which is definitely not the case for the LP!).

This is so well-written it is a good read from cover-to-cover. I consider it the best Baja guidebook on Amazon and second only to the AAA guidebook. This is one of the very few that I would consider a must-have on a trip to Baja. Tons of current, factual information and recommendations.

This is a terrific book - I was a bit hesitant at first but since I got it I haven't been able to put it down. Not only is it honest and informative but it doesn't include all the complicated where to go, what to see info you usually find in normal guide books. This book tells you as it is! Definitely a big help as it is my first time to Europe and I really didn't have any idea what to expect except for what people have told me. Must buy on top your Lonely Planets/Eyewitness Travel books.

who ever wrote the rough guide to India obviously didnt have a very good time. almost every section is prefaced with "try to get out of this area as soon as possible, but if you have to stay here are some places you can get some bread and coffee." its down on most every city and only has a couple of places it can bring itself to recommend.

i never had any problem with any of the hotel or restaurant information but having that book was like having a whiny friend along who wanted to go home. it became a joke at the end every time we consulted the book on a new city and it had a mopey description.

i left mine on the table at the YMCA in Delhi on purpose.

ps do not eat the dahl at the ymca in delhi.

I have lived in Guatemala City now for 7 months. I recently spent a couple of weeks in Antigua and found the information in the Rough Guide (2006) about restaurants, cafes and things to see to be out of date and not complete. I saw a review from another person that said the danger warnings were too strong. I am glad that person had a safe trip, but regardless, Guatemala is dangerous. The criminals won't hesitate to shot a person if they resist giving up money or valuables. Don't let that stop you from visiting, as many come here with no problems. Most of the crimes are target of opportunity so be a smart traveler. That said, I found this book to have a good layout.

I ordered this guide based on the reviews and no regrets! I was in Jordan with my daughter and the book was fantastic! We followed the recommended tour in Petra and it was great. I like to be prepared before my trips and if you are planning to go to Jordan with this book you can't go wrong. Great guides great recommendations pefect travel mate!

Finally a brand spanking new update to this excellent guide. The last edition was October 2004.

I have been to Romania 10 times and I still am discovering new places in this fascinating country.

This review compares the Lonely Plantet Greece (4th Edition) with the Rough Guide Greece (8th edition). We spent 2.5 weeks in July, 2001 in Greece, our first visit, and these were our guide books.
A relucant 4 stars to each, and a slight preference for RG. We certainly found the books serviceable, and they gave us good ideas of where in Greece we wanted to go. But they were much less valuable in their listings for individual destinations. They were the least valuable compared to the other LP and RG travel books we've used (Portugal, Italy, Thailand, Tokyo).

As usual, they both overstate their hotel rankings which to me make sense only if you've been sleeping out on the beach from necessity, and now have finally scraped some money together for a room. ... Read More:

This is edition number 12 in the Rough Guide to Portugal series. Believe me, Rough Guide has this country down to the square inch.

First, the country. Portugal was the most powerful country in the world in the 15th century, only to be eclipsed by Spain in the 16th, but that's not the point. The point is that after about a century of tremendous opulence, Portugal's fortune began to sink with its weak, superstitious monarchy. The Lisbon earthquake in the 18th century was the nail in the coffin, and by the 19th century, Portugal had become a European fringe state - a long forgotten backwater.
