In addition to providing me with the basics of where to stay, where to go, etc. RG gave me all of the cultural/historical information I needed to have a deeper understanding of Egyptian culture and better enjoy my trip. The enhanced discussion of "baksheesh" was particularly useful!!

My daughter in college is studying anthropology. I gave this to her as a Christmas gift-she loves it. It contains good decriptions of festivals
around the world, time, place, etc. Excellent photos. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves travel and festivals.

My wife and I used the first edition of this book to figure out the nuts and bolts of traveling around the world. It was absolutely invaluable. It gave excellent advice about what to pack (and what not to take) how to go about the planning process, and basics such as getting around, where to stay, etc. Throughout our 10 month long trip, I thought back on the book and appreciated the advice that we had received from it. I recommend this book to everyone I meet who is considering taking an extended trip.

Richard Trillo's guides to Kenya extend from the days of "The Real Guide," a span of time and editions that should suffice in achieving the ultimate travel guide. While it qualifies as the best available Kenya guide, the Rough Guide team's 8th edition could and should be better. Its inside front cover states figuratively that the book "concludes with all the small print," but the reader encounters literal small print throughout the discussions of reviewed places to stay and eat. The key to the guide's accommodation price coding system is somewhat obscurely presented on page 61 where tiny numerals 1-9 appear even more obscurely within solid green circles. This was my first Rough Guide purchase as I have always been a fan of Lonely Planet. I bought the Argentina guide since it was published recently and used it specifically for a trip to Buenos Aires. I thought that the information was relatively good in terms of descriptions of neighborhoods in general, but not detailed enough for my tastes. Pricing is difficult, even for a very recent edition, due to the inflation in Argentina. However, I prefer Lonely Plant for giving more substantive historical backgrounds in their guides as well as telling it as it is in their hotel, restaurant, etc. reviews.

We just returned from visiting Ecuador for the first time. Between the four of us, we had several choices for guidebooks, but found The Rough Guide to Ecuador to be the most helpful when looking for a place to eat or to sleep. We'll only take this one if we go back!

Admittedly, Lonely Planet's version is a couple years old now, but this Rough Guide is SO much better in terms of what to expect, how to get around, cultural aspects, what to bring, and a general cohesive overview of the region, it's sort of ridiculous. Lonely Planet's book is essentially useless compared to this. We're moving to West Africa for an extended stay, and this book has been helpful, informative, and even an interesting read. I'm glad that I waited for and then purchased this new release rather than just sticking with the guidebooks I had.
