I traveled to Belgium in 1999 on a whim, for a long weekend in Antwerp, with about three days' notice. It was the best trip to Europe I've ever made. First, let me give you five really good reasons to go to Belgium and Luxembourg.

1) Since they are somewhat off the beaten path (with the possible exception of Brugge (Bruges), in Flanders), they're cheap. You can get top quality accommodations, food, and beer for about half what you would expect to pay for similar quality in Paris, Cologne or Amsterdam.
2) If well-preserved, but still functioning, medieval towns are your thing, consider this for a moment: Antwerp, Brugge, Ghent, Namur, Mechelen, Leuven. Any questions?

My daughter in college is studying anthropology. I gave this to her as a Christmas gift-she loves it. It contains good decriptions of festivals
around the world, time, place, etc. Excellent photos. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves travel and festivals.

I am traveling to Ireland soon, and found myself in need of a Rough Guide-- because no one else does it better. So far its been instrumental in planning my trip: from arrival in the Southern port cities to a trip around the Ring of Kerry to our planned stay in Dublin, its the starting point in accounting for lodging, restaurants, and activities. No guide can encapsulate the entire country they're "guiding" you through, but the very best give you a great sense of where and how to begin engaging with the country or countries in question and the Rough Guide typically does this with aplomb. I'm sold on Rough Guides. This book is like having a history book to go along with info about so many popular and not so popular places that after reading the description about them, you want to visit. Every time I open it, I learn something new and it makes me want to visit so many places in the USA.

It is better to have this book than nothing. It does have some basic information in it. But there are also very basic things left out. We actually bought another guide book while we were in Italy to complement all that was lacking in this one.

I'm surprised by the negative reviews of this book.

While staying in a great hostel (that did happen to be recommended in this book)two of my roommates traveling together begged me to let them keep my Rough Guide To Peru 6. They were carrying Lonely Planet.

Also, while traveling with friends whom I had met carrying different Peru guides (LP included) I always was curious to read how various guides wrote-up a Peru site that I had visited already. With limited exceptions, I felt the Rough Guide to be superior. (I never ran across anyone with a Moon guide and I used them in Costa Rica and was very impressed).

My wife and I used the first edition of this book to figure out the nuts and bolts of traveling around the world. It was absolutely invaluable. It gave excellent advice about what to pack (and what not to take) how to go about the planning process, and basics such as getting around, where to stay, etc. Throughout our 10 month long trip, I thought back on the book and appreciated the advice that we had received from it. I recommend this book to everyone I meet who is considering taking an extended trip.
