The Washington Manual is like a mini-DiPiro's. It is especially great because it is small enough to be carried in a backpack without the extra weight. The material inside is not too general yet not too overwhelming. Being a pharmacist that have been out of school for a few years, it is a great review of disease states. The book covers the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy for each disease state.

I now have a book to give all the important people in my sons' lives. This is a powerful book based on real science and fact, not opinions. Thank heavens there are people like Dr. Offit strong enough to weather the storm of popular opinion.

I mourn for a generation of our children not being protected from harmful illnesses due to a misguided attempt to protect them. I have sympathy for the parents like me who have had to struggle to come to terms with their children's autism. I have nothing but scorn for the politicians, lawyers and corrupt doctors who have taken advantage of my fellow parents for their own personal gain. Walter Isaacson has done a masterful job of retracing Albert Einstein's life, including his earliest childhood, his miracle year of 1905, the development of general relativity and his political activism. This book is an erudite yet thoroughly readable and entertaining look at the man.

His genius was in being able to see physical meaning to equations; to him an equation was a representation of physical reality. His weakness was in not accepting quantum mechanics, to which can be attributed his famous quote about God and dice. Most enjoyable about the book were his exchanges with the quantum scientists such as Max Born and Niels Bohr. Gilbert notes that the frontal lobe evolved in order to control the environment in our quest for safety and pleasure (avoid/approach reactions). It does so largely by trying to predict the future. Unfortunately, we often stumble because our predictions are so often based on poor information gleaned from our past and present experiences through the filter of our inaccurate memories. In other words, we tend to repeat false assumptions and often poor decisions when predicting our futures so that when we do actually find happiness, it is often stumbled upon rather than planned.

I just finished reading Dr. Barnard's book and I'm reading it a second time! I found his book informative and explained in easy to understand terms. I think he makes a very good case for reasons not to continue eating a meat-based diet as the effects of a high fat animal diet lead to many of the popular illnesses and diseases we read about today (e.g., diabetes, stroke, heart attack, etc.)

I was not a vegan or vegetarian before reading this book and I know that some reviewers may think there is too much of a vegan agenda, but I would disagree. Plant based diets are a healthy and economical way to live your life. It's about time we shed our Euro-centric views and gave more credit to the indigenous people that were here first. This book is well written and makes use of the research of others. It is nicely organized and collected together in one place. None is original research and not too surprising if you are familar with the field. However if this is new to you then you might be in for a surprise, history is not quite the way you might have been taught. A good quick read, lively, engaging and thought provoking. I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to more from the same author.

I had high hopes for The Migraine Brain after seeing Dr. Bernstein on the Today show. She talked about the brain of someone with migraines being different than others. This topic she does cover well in her book; Chapter 2, The Migraine Brain - How It's Different and What That Means for You contains useful information I hadn't read anywhere else before.
However, what was disappointing is that she states on pages 15-16 that migraine is a chronic illness, meaning you cannot get rid of it. Not only is this not true, many people have recovered from migraine, but on the dustcover of the book itself is a quote from Dr. Christiane Northrup where she refers to herself as a FORMER migraine sufferer. I will admit, I tried it at first to lose the weight. What I didn't know that my mood would change within the first few days. I was happier than ever, more energized than ever and felt healthy. I have Multiple Sclerosis, and I have to say, no drug a doctor will give me to feel the energy to wake in the morning compares to the Master Cleanse. I was on the Master Cleanse for a total of 14 days... I also lost almost 20lbs. When I started, I didn't think I would make it to day 3, but I didn't want to stop! I recommend it to everyone I know now. TRY IT!
