.Adventuring in New Zealand: The Sierra Club Travel Guide to the Pearl of the Pacific (Adventuring in New Zealand) City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club by: Margaret Jefferies 1993-09 I am inclined to agree with reviewer Jaffe and the Editorial Reviews. As a native Kiwi I know Auckland and Fiordland well having hiked extensively in both areas. The Auckland sections covers the well known outdoor main attractions of the region well: the islands of the Hauraki Gulf and the extensive network of regional parks, many of which are coastal and have fantastic views from the walks in them. Fiordland is the "honey pot" for accessible wilderness hiking in New Zealand. The description of the History, National Parks, short day walks and longer multi-day treks on well formed tracks is quite good. The maps are a bit scant, but you will buy better maps when you arrive in an area. And NZ does publish a wide selection of very good ... .Hiking the Great Basin: The High Desert Country of California, Nevada, and Utah (Sierra Club Totebook) City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club by: John Hart 1992-03 John Hart is the real deal, and anyone hiking the Great Basin needs this book. His mileages are accurate and so are his descriptions of routes. The only criticism I offer is that the book is a bit dated--for example, there is an easy-to-follow use trail to Morey Peak instead of the XC route description JH offers. Also worth noting is that JH must have a very low-slung vehicle. Driving a garden-variety SUV (1996 Jeep Cherokee) I have never had any trouble on any of the roads he describes. .Foot-Loose in the Swiss Alps (A Sierra Club Totebook) City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club by: William Reifsnyder June 12, 1982 I found this book extremely useful both for the information it shared about the Hut avaliablity and the descriptions of each area. I was able to plan a well thought out trip using this guide. The maps that it provided were O.k. but not as helpful as they could have been. .Alaska: Images of the Country (Sierra Club Books Publication) City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club by: John McPhee, Galen Rowell June 12, 1982 Galen Rowell was one of the great outdoor photographers and most of his books are full of spectacular pictures of mountain scenery. But if you are expecting a normal picture book about Alaska, this isn't it. Instead this is a look at a place that is full of ambiguity. The book is structured around John McPhee's book "Coming into the Country". In that book McPhee gives an insightful description of Alaska as a place, and its inhabitants. The Alaskans seem torn between preserving the wilderness and developing it and the extracts contained in this volume capture that spirit. .SC-WALKING EUROPE (Sierra Club Adventure Travel Guides) City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club by: Susanna Margolis March 12, 1986 I have travelled part of the route described by this book. I found the information in the book very useful in planning our trip and in providing local information which made our travels on this route more enjoyable. The book itself is a good read for anyone who is interested in European travel even if not comtemplating undertaking this specific trip. .The Sierra Club Guides to the National Parks of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club by: Sierra Club November 14, 1995 There are no more beautifully written or pictured guides to the national parks than this series put out by the Sierra Club. For a historical, geological, and biological snapshot of a park, no book does it better. If you need very specific information, contacting the park is your best bet. There is some information about trails, camping, contact info, etc. The main purpose of the book, however, is to give you an understanding about all aspects of the park.
