. Moon Handbooks: Ecuador (1st Ed.)
City Travel Guides > Books > South America
by: Julian Smith
1998-03
I first bought this book a couple of months ago and was really pleased at first. It seemed to give good information on a variety of areas and gave recommendations of things to do that were probably off of the beaten path. Based on the book I drew up a list of the places in Ecuador that I would like to visit and laid the book down for a little bit until I had firmed up my plans some more.
On picking up the book again I started to see some of the glaring errors I had missed in my first reading. There are very few maps of the cities that are spoken of in the book so it doesn't really do you any good to know an address if you have no idea where in the city it is. When there is a map it will label all of the things mentioned in that ... Read More:

. Running The Amazon
City Travel Guides > Books > South America
by: Joe Kane
June 17, 1989
I enjoyed this book & felt I learned a lot about the heart of South America - mainly Peru, Columbia & Brazil. If you are into white-water sports then there is no doubt this is a 5 star book. I enjoyed it but to me it was a good 4 star book. I found the first half of the book dragged a little more, it was more about getting the expedition started, some bickering amongst team members & making slow progress in the incredibly dangerous terrain of Peru.
In the second half of the book the core team remains & the story does a better job of explaining the countryside (riverside) & the interesting people they meet along the way. Joe & his partner's earned their fame on this adventure - 6 months of abusing yourself ... Read More:

. Black Frontiersmen
City Travel Guides > Books > South America
by: Norman E. Whitten
September 04, 1974
Although this is a National Geographic travel chronicle it reads more like an adventure story. You will not believe what Karin gets herself in to. I don't want to say more for it would spoil your adventure with the book.
This book is also a wonderful exploration of an amazing area. For those who have not been to Peru or neighboring countries, it is a good taste. For those who have visited, it will stir up good memories.
Enjoy!

. Back from Tuichi
City Travel Guides > Books > South America
by: Yossi Ghinsberg
December 21, 1993
I bought this book after hearing Yossi Ghinsberg tell his tale at a conference I attended. He is even more incredible in person, and adds humor and reflection on the events that took place in the jungle. Many people left wondering if his story were true. It's an incredible story, and I was thrilled to find that while I read the book, I could hear Yossi's voice in my head, telling his story again.

. Voyaging: Southward from the Strait of Magellan
City Travel Guides > Books > South America
by: Rockwell Kent
February 01, 2000
Although Rockwell Kent is mainly known as an artist and illustrator he also deserves a fine reputation as a travel/adventure writer. This book describes his months of small boat sailing and trekking in the islands and channels of Tierra del Fuego at the very southern tip of South America.
This was in the 1920's, a time well before ecotourism became a business. Going off on an adventure had a very different meaning: no reliable maps, no aerial photos, no GPS, no satellite phone to let you bail out when it got a little tough - it was actually dangerous out there. The book lets you in on an experience probably unobtainable in the modern world.
The wonderful illustrations by Kent are a bonus, but the style is more grandiloquent than his classic "N by E".

. Let's go to Colombia, (Judson guides to Latin America)
City Travel Guides > Books > South America
by: Lyman and Ellen Judson
1949
a very honest and coolly written book. While the narrative appears disjointed at first, one realizes that if the author were to write all the details in chrono sequence, given that he has been travelling for years, it would have been several fat volumes. This is not srictly a travelogue in the sense of day 1 we did tis, day 2 that happened.. rather, its a collection of incidents and events that took place in the couirse of the author's travels, that illuminate life in the various places he has been. I feel like hitting the road again, with no fixed destination in mind, no final goal, timeless...
