. Tristes tropiques
City Travel Guides > Books > South America
by: Claude Levi-Strauss
1974
I like to travel and to observe the cities, landscapes, the plants and animals and the human inhabitants of the countries I go to. So does Levy-Strauss, and he is a fantastic observer, much more sharp-eyed than I could ever hope to be, and a highly entertaining writer. In this classic he talks about a wide range of observations from a number of corners of the world, but mainly about South America.
The book deals with Levi-Strauss' time as a teacher in Brazil and his trips into the South American hinterland; his escape from Nazi-occupied France; His later expeditions to visit remote tribes in the Amazon; and an assortment of observations about such diverse topics as the frustration of the traveler to never encounter the true, pristine state ... . Latin America Profiled: Essential Facts on Society, Business, and Politics in Latin America (Syb Factbook)
City Travel Guides > Books > South America
by: Barry Turner
September 02, 2000
Wood's book is a very informative account of a little known episode in US and Paraguayan history. The exploration of the Water Witch was central in a set of events that followed: the opening of the river waterways, the end of the isolation of Paraguay and, as a consequence, its diminished safety, that led to its destruction in the 1865-1870 war. The limits of the book are its lack of context (Perry's expedition to Japan for instance, the US expedition against Paraguay in 1855, the consequences of the opening of the riverways), some imprecisions (the battle of Monte Caseros is placed some 500 km. from where it was fought) and the poor quality of the illustrations.

. Tschiffely's Ride: Southern Cross to Pole Star (Library of travel classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > South America
by: A.F. Tschiffely
September 01, 1983
This is a most incredible story about Aime Tschiffley and his 2 criollo horse, Mancha and Gato, who in 1925, walked/rode from Argentina all the way to Washington, DC. The journey carried them 10,000 miles in 2-1/2 years across the most inhospitable and remote regions one can imagine. They endured heat and cold, sickness and hunger, climbed the Andes and walked the depths of the rain forests. In the end, they were welcomed as heros everywhere they went. Tschiffley even met with the President in the oval office and spoke before the National Geographic Society. The most heart-warming part of this improbable tale is the bond between man and horse. It's sad at times, as when Mancha was struck by a car, and comedic at times, as when Mancha bucked his way through ... Read More:
