I'm no herpetologist but I couldn't put this book down! The author has a real knack for weaving together the details of how to do science with the excitement of real discoveries. She brings alive the magic of science, travel, survival, interacting with other cultures, and curiosity for how the world works. A great read!

"Following the Equator" leaves me in the position of having read nearly everything published by Mark Twain. I'm only short "The American Claimant" and a speech or essay or two. I'll deal with those shortly but, in the meantime, I'll savor the last of the truly noteworthing writings of America's greatest author. Towards the end of the journey "The Guilded Age" was a struggle and "The Prince and the Pauper" was good but not if the measuring stick was the works of Mark Twain. I wasn't sure what to expect of "Following the Equator" because I had heard so little about it. In addition, I had found "The Innocents Abroad" and "A Tramp Abroad" to have been tedious at times. There is so much more to Yellowstone than can be seen from the roads and boardwalks. "A Ranger's Guide to Yellowstone Day Hikes" guides you to trail heads you may not find on your own and out into the park revealing the incredible diversity that is unique to YNP. Each hike is rated for difficulty and the ratings are generally accurate. The book fits easily into a day pack and the topo maps let you know what you're getting into elevation wise before you set off. I strongly recommend that you include this book in your planning of a Yellowstone adventure.

This book seems to cover many great hiking areas in Sedona. It is quite explicit re: directions and information about the hiking trails. Great book for a person new to the area or even people who have been around awhile. Very informative!

This is the first book by Hansen I've read, and I enjoyed it. It is a very funny and quick read. There are not many travel writers who describe events like "It was like an all-male barn dance at sea." Or describe a man spitting his flaming dentures off a pier on Thursday Island.

I totally related to the author and why he was out there on the trail. Well written and although the historical commentary sometimes bored me which I admit I skipped sometimes, I could not put this book down. The author's recollection and re cantering of being on the trail, it's hardships, on and off again friendships, losing 75 pounds, why he was out there in the first place, trying to find himself... well, again, I totally related to how he felt. I also give his wife a lot of kudos for sticking it out and letting the author do what he needed to do at that time of his life. I really liked how the book ended or should I say the author's quest ended? Those last few pages when he went to Trail Days in Damascus..said it all. I ordered this book for my Dad only to find he already owned it. When I received it I refused the order and Amazon still charged me shipping, even after I called within hours of my order to cancel and they could not help me. BUt I would recommend this book if you are looking for some good trail food?

I'm not a big book reader, too much riding or other things to do. This book, I just couldn't put it down! What an adventure, I want Louis to go on another trip. This book has excitement and disapointments. If you have ever gone on a bike trip, you can relate to Louis with either someone she traveled with, or it makes you see yourself in how she explains her companions. Louis- if you are out there, YOU GO GIRL!!!!!

On one level, this book is a crackup. It mercilessly skewers the worst places on earth, places that combine poverty, fear, and oppression. I dare you to read a single page without laughing.

On another level, this make really makes you think about the huge percentage of the world's population that doesn't have electricity, considers pain to be a second language, and considers a good day one in which you eat. It's incredible.

On the day I wrote this review, this edition is being offered for sale for one cent. An amazing bargain, in terms of entertainment per penny.
