Moleskine Pocket Journal - Plain Pages

I love this book! I lived in North Africa, briefly, but had friends that lived in Kenya and places where safaris actually happen. So, I have heard many first hand accounts of life in modern day Africa, (Malaria!) but thanks to the gorgeous photographs, torn bits of history, diary entries, drawings and Beard's interesting explanations, I could experience a different Africa. Aside from actually undergoing a painful series of shots, venturing into the grasslands, climbing Kilamanjaro, or just trying to figure out the settings on my camera, I think reading or just gazing at this book makes the perfect African holiday. Romantic, tragic and inspiring...I still fear mossies the most!

For the last 4 years, I've had a summer job at Zion and have used this guide in hiking all but 2 of the trails listed in here. The trail guides are accurate and give a person an excellent idea of how difficult a trail is along with how interesting it is. Take it with you. It will help.

Being a recent college graduate who does not have a set plan for what he wants to do in life, this book was right up my alley. It appeals perfectly to a young guy who does not want to jump right into the cookie-cutter corporate world right away.
It gives the reader excellent insight, as well as many laughs, into some of the adventures that a rowdy, young, thrill seeker can experience with some motive and planning.
Besides the commonalities i've shared with the mindset this book promotes, I've had a lot of fun reading it and plan to use it as a motivator to get out there and make the world mine.

Three books I use and reuse for hiking: this one (I'm happy it's been updated and use it for pointing me in the right direction reference more than detailed trail directions); the Golden Gate Trailblazer for all the gorgeous trails on the San Francisco coastline and those in beautiful Marin; the Stairway Walks in San Francisco book. Someday I hope to try some of the southern California outings. This book is very thick and comprehensive.

I've read the reviews of "Strange Last Voyage," and while I concur with many of the thoughtful, accurate reviews, I can only give the book four stars. My beef? The persistently unsympathetic tone in the book.

Crowhurst's fate was a tragic one and deserving of sympathy. While it was the culmination of many poor decisions (an understatement, indeed!), that he ended up in a position of such desperation merits at least a bit more compassion than the authors are willing to grant. I understand their disdain for the foolhardiness of many of Crowhurst's choices--as well as his choice of a solution for "winning the race"--I found that the portrayal was a nearly sniggering, dismissive evaluation of the man. This book is a wonderful guide to bike trails. It makes planning trips easy and fun, and it's very descriptive about the specifics of each trail (gravel, grass, paved, etc.)

I thought I could just find this info on the internet, but to no avail, so I bought the book. I was nicely surprised that the book is exactly what I needed, good descriptions of each trail and a good map, AND how to get to the beginnings of each trail.

If snorkeling is your thing, this book will provide a complete guide as to equipment recommendations, locations, getting to the right location, safety issues, as well as many beautiful photos which identify a number of fish available when you snorkel. I have these authors' book on Maui snorkeling which is quite good. This one is even better and more complete. A must buy for the avid Hawaiian snorkeler!

I checked the first edition of this book out from the library and then I didn't want to return it I liked it so much. A lot of other hiking books are hard to read and don't have pictures to help you visualize where you're going. When I saw the new edition with COLOR PICTURES, I had to buy it. This book is great-- it gives good directions, it has a picture for each hike, it even tells you if there is a campsite to say overnight or if you should expect crowds. Trail etiquette is also a good thing to include; hopefully people actually take it to heart. I love the handdrawn sketches of the trail; they do a great job of showing the topography of the hike. I had the previous (original?) iteration of this book, and it was very useful. This has even more information, including a handy difficulty rating system (although one was wrong). If you plan on doing any hiking in/around RMNP, this is the one to get.
