Good info, but some of the information is outdated. As one example, one hotel is marked as the Kona Hilton, but it has not been a Hilton property since about 1994. The book contains some very basic how-to snorkeling information as well as descriptions of access areas.

I found the information in this book much more useful than any other travel guide I have purchased. The lodging information for Yellowstone, for example, describes the state of specific room types at each location!

This book's one failing is its skimpy selection of parks.

I've owned half a dozen knot books, and this is the best of them. The problem with so many knot books is they show you step three as step one, and make you feel like an idiot because you can't even start. This one doesn't do that. It has by far the easiest instructions for a monkey's fist of any book I've seen.
I don't get the critical reviews. The author is a certified knot superstar and certainly knows his junk. He's seen the other books, and wrote this one. I think most of the criticisms fall into the "over-analyzing" category, or people who just aren't comfortable with two-thumbs-upping anything. Listen--this is a fantastic book. You want to learn knots? It'll teach you.

This book is the go to source for hiking in the San Gabriel mountains.
I have earlier editions, and was pleased to see many hikes updated and revisited and new ones added.
All previously closed or open hikes now revisited and updated.
author is handing off this book to writer of a younger generation who embraces the same spirit and style of the excellent ealier editions.
nicely done.
glad I updated my copy.
Also comes with a great water proof-tear proof map.

So self-identifies Richard Halliburton, author and protagonist of this story of glorious adventure.

One of my weaknesses as a reader is for travelogues. I read many of them, relishing the accounts of the obscure as well as the renowned. But truly, it's not my weakness so much as the genre's strength. Travel somehow turns unexceptional literary talents into Hemingways and Nabokovs; the experience of the exotic turns us all into wide-eyed children again, while simultaneously equipping us with powers of description and evocation that we never otherwise master.

For the last 4 years, I've had a summer job at Zion and have used this guide in hiking all but 2 of the trails listed in here. The trail guides are accurate and give a person an excellent idea of how difficult a trail is along with how interesting it is. Take it with you. It will help.
