A very remarkable book written in the 13th century. Many secrets were reviled when Marco returned. And may interesting explanations of things like the origin of cinnamon.

Marco writes well enough of his travels and you feel that you are there. You can actually follow the trail if you have a map. He describes the flora and fauna of each region and describes the economics and industry of the region.

Example: "The women of the superior class are in like manner free from superfluous hairs; their skins are fare, and they are well formed."

It is interesting to see how little has changed from Marco Polo's 13th century and now.

I was excited to get this book a year ago and spent many delighted hours thumbing through it. We've gone to probably just shy of 25 of the places listed (all in the U.S). The kids have had the best time. There is a geographical index in the back that list the places by state or country location which is helpful. We've grouped together several listed activities into one trip. If you have an adventurous spirit, I think you'll love this book. This isn't the only travel book you'll ever need,either. While there is some very basic information on where to fly into and where to stay, it isn't enough to get by on. I think this book should be thought of more as an idea book rather than a travel guide.

What a remarkable book this is - disguised as a simple guide to climate change, but actually a very sophisticated, balanced, thoughtful analysis of the many aspects of climate change: the physical causes of climate change, the symptoms of a warming planet, what the average person can do, and the politics surrounding the entire issue.

Loaded with great information and highly readable, although it never talks down to the intended audience, which is aimed at everybody (may be too difficult for people under the age of 12). Lots of photographs and charts to help explain what climate change is, what causes it, and what the symptoms are.

I am writing this review after visiting Peru, and using this book as a guide.

The book is very thick, but actually contains very little useful information. Most pages are simply full with senselessly long lists of restaurants, hotels, and other contact information. Such things are better found on the internet, or by simply walking around the city. Moreover, a lot of that information was already out of date a little more than 1 year after publication. So, about two thirds of the book is immediately utterly useless weight.

Instead, a good guide book,
1) would have a lot of pictures. There are none in this book!
2) would have a lot of maps. A few are available in this book, but are not sufficiently detailed, not well-prepared, ... Read More:

Going back to Chile and will visit more regions. This book is not only my perfect guide, but informs me of its history so I will not be totally ignorant and will be able to ask intelligent questions of the natives.

I enjoyed Ewan and Charley's first trip, and was excited to see that they were on another adventure. Having been to Africa myself, I was especially interested to see how the boys fared. I was very disappointed in the amount of time that the boys and the crew spent bickering with each other. Here are these two rich guys, on the trip of a lifetime, and they are complaining constantly! While their side trips to introduce us to various charities were moving, the amount of time spent complaining about the roads (did you think the roads in Africa would be pristine?), the amount of time on the bikes (should have planned better!) each day and about each other (this isn't your first trip, so you should know about everyone's little quirks) made the book a bit unenjoyable. ... On my 2008 thru-hike attempt of the Trail (I had to go home because of my knees) I bought both the Data Book and the Thru-Hikers' Companion. I wound up taking the Companion with me and leaving the Data Book at home. There wasn't much of anything in the Data Book that wasn't in the Companion, and the latter had much more detailed and useful information.

When I do it again I'll take the Companion along with the extremely detailed section guidebooks for each section, which would have helped me out in a few circumstances this time around.

Adrift is the true story of Steven Callahan, whose small boat sunk in the Atlantic Ocean, after he floats on his inflatable raft for 76 days before finally being rescued.


This is right out of one of my favorite genres - true life survival stories. The story starts slow, but once he has to abandon his boat sinks and he is has to really start surviving, it is very engaging. I greatly enjoyed reading of all the details of his water-gathering, shark-deterring, fishing and storm riding.

I am pretty sure I would have died about day 20. Great reading for anyone interested in this genre. Other favorites from this genre include "The Long Walk", "We Die Alone" and "Alive".
