. Awol on the Appalachian Trail: Second Edition
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: David Miller
May 18, 2006
I picked this book up both for entertainment and because I was interested in learning more about the experience of thru-hiking the AT. Satisfaction was delivered on both fronts. The author provides just enough detail that you're there with him on the trail, while not boring you with constant day to day information which could get tedious. This is not a book for planning a hike, however is still a useful read for anyone who may be toying with the idea.
I won't pretend to know what it's like to be on the trail for 6 months and 2173 miles, but at the end of the book I felt a sense of not wanting it to end. When AWOL speaks of his longing and loss in the months following his hike the reader feels a similar nostalgia. I recommend ... Read More:

. More Readings From One Man's Wilderness: The Journals of Richard L. Proenneke, 1974-1980
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Richard L. Proenneke
January 05, 2006
Richard Proenneke's journals from 1974 - 1980 detail everyday life at Twin Lakes Alaska. From the daily adventures of hiking and filming wildlife to the more mundane chores of chopping firewood, and making sourdough pancakes, Dick reveals his everyday life in the wilderness. Dick's prose is surprisingly easy to read for a daily journal, and entertaining. He easily transports the reader to the wilderness, and all its beauty, danger, and tranquility. A more sanguine aspect as the journal unfolds is the eventual encroachment by Man, stayed somewhat by the National Park status of the region. Dick's writings are unassuming, and yet very powerful in their simplicity, and the pictures they paint. A rare man, that I wish I could have met. I highly ... Read More:

. The Pregnancy Test
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Erin McCarthy
October 01, 2005
I started this book really into it, thinking it would be a great read. And it was, up until the Caribbean trip. The sex scenes were so overly graphic, you'd think a teenage boy had written them. And the characters just got dumb after that. It was really hard for me to finish, and I agree with some of the other reviewers who saw the ending from a mile away. Initially I was going to try some of the author's other books, but this one was unnecessarily raunchy in my opinion.

. Appalachian Trail Thru-Hikers' Companion (2008)
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
from: Appalachian Trail Conservancy
January 16, 2008
If I had to cut my gear for an Appalachian Trail hike down to two items, I would carry water and the Companion. Seriously, I would take the Companion with me even on section hikes, and possibly even on a day hike.
After a long week of hiking up and down mountains and seeing nothing but trees, leaves, mud, rain, snow and the occasional deer, the Companion will keep you motivated by telling you just how far you have left to go before you can get a pizza or an all you can eat buffet. (After your first few weeks out, you'll really begin to appreciate the importance of a good all you can eat buffet!) Or a shower. And you probably need one by now.
After spending four months out on the A.T. this year and comparing notes with other hikers, I found that the ... Read More:

. The Dog Lover's Companion to California: The Inside Scoop on Where to Take Your Dog (Dog Lover's Companion Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Maria Goodavage
May 28, 2008
When I read all the stellar reviews for this book, I thought it was the perfect book for me. We have had our dog for two months, and are now venturing out to different places with her. We bought this book last night (and paid full price for it--fancy THAT) in anticipation of a free-roaming day trip today.
First, I do have to say that creating a comprehensive guide is exceedingly difficult. The number of hotels, restaurants and attractions you'd have to visit...well, it's mind-boggling. However, there are both good and bad points to this book, depending on what you're looking for.
Good Points:
1. Very detailed information about the parks, beaches and recreations areas, complete with an easy-to-read rating system (1 to 4 paws) and a clear ... Read More:
