. Frommer's NYC Free & Dirt Cheap (Frommer's New York City for Free & Dirt Cheap)
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Ethan Wolff
December 03, 2008
I've lived in NYC for more than 10 years now, and am very good at navigating the city. I tried to use this book to help me select any random inexpensive restaurant one afternoon, (in any random neighborhood) and found it maddeningly frustrating.
In general it's a good reference book for say..."picking one thing out, and then executing a plan on visiting that spot". Maybe that's the problem, I was expecting more of a guide book, and this book is definitely not a guide book.
To look at the maps with their legends and keys, and then to try to refer back to the detailed description page is VERY FRUSTRATING.
The legend is organized alphabetically, but not the reference material.
Ok, I thought, cross ... Read More:

. Out There

by: Ted Kerasote

Well it started with Merle's Door. After that wonderful book I wanted to read more about the writer and see what else he had up his sleeve. Well I was not dissappointed with this book. What a joy to read. Every sentence, every word was descriptive. He does not waste words. Very enjoyable and a pleaseure to read. It feels like you are right there with him enjoying the same visual treat, in the canoe, watching the wildlife or lying in the tent while the rain pours from the skys. I love the way this guy writes. I too used to camp and canoe until work and worries kept me with my nose to the computer or exhausted from work stretched out on the couch. He has inspired me to see nature and be apart of it again. I am going to plan another camp/canoe ... Read More:

. The Face of Battle: A Study of Agincourt, Waterloo, and the Somme
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: John Keegan
January 27, 1983
_The Face of Battle_ closely examines three pivitol battles: Agincourt (1415), Waterloo (1815) and the Somme (1916). In his examination, Keegan outlines the overall strategic objectives and how the battlefields were chosen (typical fare for military history), but also seeks to understand the "intangibles" of combat - how and why soldiers act as they do, and how these actions and decisions influence the outcome of battle. I have a mixed reaction to the book.
The first quarter of the book almost put me off it entirely - in it Keegan discusses military history as a discipline, its purposes and the problems in analyzing and researching it, and provides a some hisoriography. While I understand Keegan's purpose in this, I wish it had been edited ... Read More:

. Rome with Kids: An Insider's Guide
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: J.M. Pasquesi
July 01, 2007
What are the premier world destinations for tourists? Among them, of course, is Rome. Most of us have neither the time nor the money to visit Rome, but it's fun to imagine such a visit.
Rome With Kids, published in 2007, is written by a resident of Rome. It is a 240-page little glossy book with color photos or maps on virtually every page.
Ms. Pasquesi divides Rome into four parts and describes a walking tour for each part.
Part One: Ancient Rome, including the Forum and the Colosseum
Part Two: Medieval & Renaissance Rome, including the Piazza Navona and the Pantheon
Part Three: Baroque & Modern Rome, including the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps
Part Four: Papal Rome, including St. Peter's ... Read More:
