. Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse

I was disappointed in this book as I was hoping for some pure "end of the world" fun. However, better than half of these stories are not set during an apocalypse or after an apocalypse; they're merely set in some distant dystopian future. Sorry, but dystopian does not equal apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic. Claiming that the stories contained in this volume are of these genres would be like saying that "1984" is post-apocalyptic. There's a few gems in here, whether they're about armageddon or not, but mostly the stories in here are of average quality. A few of them are just bad.
It's not a bad buy, but quite a disappointment for me due to the misrepresentation of content.

. A Great and Terrible Beauty (The Gemma Doyle Trilogy)
City Travel Guides > Books > Teens
by: Libba Bray
March 22, 2005
Gemma Doyle like a normal teenage girl living in the Victorian age. Until she sees her mother's death through a vision. Soon she is in England, after spending her whole life in India, attending a boarding school called Spence academy. There she meets three girls and the adventures only get more exciting.
No matter how many times I read this book I can hardly put it down. Rich in detail, with pulse pounding adventure and something different then the other YA books on the market.
The two other books in the series are just a great and addictive. Recommended to anyone who loves fantasy and history. You can tell how much work Libba Bray put into the book.
A story with three young women who dared to live ... Read More:

. The Wednesday Wars
City Travel Guides > Books > Teens

We listened to the audiobook on a three generations family road trip and everyone loved the book. Granted, some of us were raised on Long Island in the early sixties (duck and cover drill, LILCO power outages, etc. rang true). However, even the twelve year old reluctant reader in the group raised in Mass. couldn't wait until we got back in the car to listen to more. It is a book with something for everyone. There is plenty of humor and serious concerns along with an examination of family dynamics. The setting is the Vietnam war and there are plenty of parallels for today as well. In summary, give this book a try and consider reading or listening as a family. "You sir, are a pied ninny", is now a favorite family quote.

. The Sweet Far Thing (The Gemma Doyle Trilogy)

I didn't like the ending to this book for one reason. And that reason made me so sad. Kartik dies! How dare that be the end. I hated that. Yeah I know he died for Gemma and that it was true love. But why couldn't they have made it Felicity or Ann who dies? I did really love the travel to the end. It was filled with ups and downs. You learn more about the realms. This book is twice the romance, twice the advanture and twice the magic. To each his own magic! Fans of the previous books will love the ending to the Gemma Doyle seris. I was dissapointed in the end, but this is still one of my favorite books! People who love Harry Potter and people who love the Twilight saga will love this book. Because the Gemma Doyle seris is a cross between the two, Harry Potter because ... Read More:

. The Plague of Doves: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Teens
by: Louise Erdrich
April 29, 2008
I consider Louise Erdrich the finest writer there is. Having read all of her novels, I seem to imagine that she cannot improve on her earliest works. My relationship with "Love Medicine" is so strong that I am drawn to stroke the binding to stay connected with it. Here, in The Plague of Doves, she introduces us to another array of astonishing characters, none with the familiar names her readers have loved and cherished over the years. This time, I pulled out my atlas, convinced these towns must exist! I only have to hear the name of North Dakota to conjure up her characters. Even looking at the atlas and seeing these missing towns, I imagine they're still there if you just hold the maps the right way and look hard enough. I encourage all potential readers to go back ...
