. Modern Chemistry

2002
This is my sixth year teaching using this book. I love it.
I have been teaching High School Chemistry for 11 years and have used 8 different books (including teaching AP Chem and teaching at the Community College.)
The good things about the book:
1. For High School Chemistry it is one of the most commonly used.
2. All the topics that need to be covered are covered well.
3. I like the sequencing.
o Some texts try to sequence from a historical perspective (gas laws very early) - which is very confusing for students.
o Other texts may have nuclear chemistry early - which leaves a small percent of the students always thinking that the nucleus changes in chemical reactions.
4. There are many ... Read More:

. Cracking the ACT, 2008 Edition (College Test Prep)

by: Princeton Review
December 11, 2007
During the spring of my junior year in high school I took the SAT for the first time. My scores were a disaster... R-510 M-510 W-540!!! OMIGOD HOW THE F*** were these going to get me into NYU, my dream school. Over the summer I decided to study for the ACT which I heard was easier. I bought the princeton review book and the real act study guide and read it each book cover to cover. A friend suggested that i buy the sat math level 1 and 2 subjects test book as well to review my math. After a summer of constant study i took the test again and got E-28,M-32,R:29,S-30, and an Essay score of 10. for a composite score of 30! 4 months later i got into NYU early decision!!!
my suggestion to you: students who are struggling with sat/act tests ... Read More:

. Speaker for the Dead (Ender, Book 2)
City Travel Guides > Books > Teens
by: Orson Scott Card

Don't get this if you liked Ender's game and are looking for a sequel. Speaker for the Dead has only one of the same characters - Ender - and he's much older. No one he knew is in this book, and there's little that relates to his past or future.
If that were not enough, I found the book to be subdued and tedious, and somehow off-center. It certainy isn't Card's best at all. The story doesn't have a lot of coherence, and none of the characters are very memorable or admirable at all. Alot of details and features of the story really iritated me.
I think if he wanted to write this story, he should have just presented it as a totally new book. I came to this wanting a sequel to Ender's Game (a masterful and original book) but instead ... Read More:

City Travel Guides > Books > Teens
by: Patricia McCormick
April 01, 2008
Truthfully, I started this story and stopped. Started and stopped. I kept having nightmares in my sleep of Lakshmi. These dreams were so harrowing that I would have to step away and pick up another book with new words to scrub out the ones from Sold that conjured the images in my mind. (I know this may sound weird to some people but I'm aware that I operate like a sponge at times, making it very difficult for me not to feel. I'm just too spiritually sensitive to such things.)
In other words, Patricia McCormick writes with a brave and an unflinching eye. The story is told from the POV of Lakshmi. A novel of this proportion is difficult to summarize because this story is about everything: all that we hold dear and all that we fear, the hopes we have ... Read More:

Review by
B.L.Morgan
This book took us further into the mythos of who The Sandman is and how at different times he's affected history. A few of the stories do not directly feature The Sandman but they are very fine stories anyway.
The stories are emotional. The artwork is moody and reflect the stories emotional impact perfectly.
I highly recommend this entire series.
