. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
City Travel Guides > Books > Teens
by: Stephen Chbosky
February 01, 1999
It took me nearly four years to get around to reading this book and it was definitely worth the wait. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is an amazing story that follows a scared and lonely teenage boy through his freshman year of high school: making friends, "discovering" girls, developing an identity, and holding on for dear life in a world much unlike anything he's ever encountered before. For anyone who has ever experienced high school, the book reminds readers just how scary, new and amazing high school can be. The book is a quick read (just over 200 pages) and written in a friendly format that instantly makes the reader empathize with the main character. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a wonderful story that will make you laugh, cry, and ... Read More:

. Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl
City Travel Guides > Books > Teens
by: Anne Frank
June 01, 1993
As a young adult I had read articles on the book. I knew the story. I saw the movie made from the book. However, I had never read the book itself.
The experience of reading the words of Anne as she lived for two year in hiding with her family, and others in hiding, was entirely different than just knowing the story. Reading another persons personal words as they were living the life that inspired them to write is a most intimate experience.
In my adult life I am glad to have had the experience of actually reading Anne Frank's words. I recommend the reading of this book to young and mature persons who wish to understand what transpired in our world history on an intimate level.

. Identical
City Travel Guides > Books > Teens
by: Ellen Hopkins
August 26, 2008
I am a high school librarian and I have read all of Hopkins' previous books so I was looking forward to this one and started it as soon as it arrived. After a few chapters, reading about the incest, I was wondering what the purpose of the book was. A friend pointed out that it was a "mirror" book -- meant to reveal how a student could see herself and her life or an event through the eyes of a character and can see how that character acts or deals with a particular situation. Hopefully to encourage that student to take steps to solve the problem. I can't write much more here because whatever I say in response to what I read would be spoilers as the book moves toward a conclusion that just fell short and ended up being somewhat unbelieavable mostly because a ... . Zoe's Tale
City Travel Guides > Books > Teens
by: John Scalzi

Perhaps his best yet! This book was an unexpected treat, and he's not only come up with yet another surprising twist and extension of the series, he's managed to pull off two amazing feats of writer craftsmanship -- a parallel story and using a teenage girl as the lead -- and both wind up helping the story!
The book's lead character is Zoe, who was a significant character in the Last Colony and is given a lot more heart and characterzation and her own plotline in this one. This book should be read after the earlier works as it would be somewhat a spoiler for the plot twists in Ghost Brigades and Last Colony if you read this one first, and since it would be fine on it's own but seems like I appreciated this one more having the background from the others ...
