. Time Out Chicago (Time Out Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Time Out Travel
from: Time Out Publishing
2004-09
The author took note of The History of Beer and Brewing in Chicago, 1833-1978 by Bob Skilnik in this book as "A somewhat slight but largely engrossing history of beer in this most boozy of cities."
Considering that this is the ONLY book ever published on the subject, I'd like to know what Mr. La Quesne has to compare this 263-page book to?
Time Out Chicago (the magazine) also did a half-hour phone interview of me about my book, and did a follow-up call to confirm some information, and then had the chutzpah to use facts from the interview in one of their features and conveniently forgot to mention that the information came from The History of Beer and Brewing in Chicago, 1833-1978 or my extensive interview with one of ... . Time Out Bangkok: And Beach Ecsapes (Time Out Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Time Out Travel
by: Philip Cornwel-Smith
October 19, 2005
This is a review of the 3rd edition of Time Out Bangkok. It's frankly not worth buying, and I say that as someone who has enjoyed other Time Out city guides. A couple of specific problems:
-The maps are frustrating. Bangkok isn't really pedestrian-friendly, but there are still great opportunities to get to know the city on foot. The itineraries that Time Out includes are interesting, but the maps often lack important street names or don't include addresses and landmarks to locate sights. (Ironically, the cover says "Now with improved maps.")
-The writing is awful. For instance: "Calls for an industrialized Kra Canal or 'land bridge' across the southern isthmus would foul the environment on which tourism relies." ... Read More:

. Time Out Budapest (Time Out Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Time Out Travel
by: Time Out
September 28, 2005
I brought the latest edition of TOBudapest, two weeks after it hit Amazon.uk, to Hungary with me this past October. That being said, I was a little let down. Granted, Budapest is a city that is still changing, establishing and re-establishing itself. However, I think Time Out missed the mark on several occasions here (and I'm a huge proponent of Time Out guides).
The maps are especially erroneous. However, Time Out is once again very handy when it comes to addresses. I'd suggest buying a map upon arrival in Budapest (a good one can be picked up at a newsstand for a couple of bucks) and working in tandem with Time Out's signature style of breaking attractions up by area.
You take your chances with the nightlife, which ... Read More:

. Time Out Lisbon (Time Out)
City Travel Guides > Books > Time Out Travel
from: Time Out Publishing
October 10, 2004
We cancelled our Christmas trip to Buenos Aires at the last minute due to the rioting there and we had 2 days to come up with another plan. We went through the Time Out city guides (as they have been terrific for previous trips to Naples, Edinburgh and Venice)and Lisbon seemed like the perfect place for a 4 day trip out of New York City. We immediately got to work using this guide to pick the hotel and create a simple and groovy 4 day itinerary of museums, restaurants and sights. The guide was so easy to use, it has well detailed maps and all the described places are given clear map references. Unlike the case with many other guide's hotel reviews, the hotel we picked was exactly as they described it. The guide is also great if you enjoy exploring ... Read More:

. Time Out Paris
City Travel Guides > Books > Time Out Travel
from: Time Out Publishing
2006-02
I have always been a big admirer of the Time Out guides. Whether the editors are writing about the "big" ones, e.g., Paris, London, Rome, or some of the less well-known cities and places, they do it with great erudition, and they also tend to avoid the cliches. No one needs a book on Paris touting the wonders of the Tour Eiffel or the Louvre.
If you pack one book for a Paris trip, I think that there can be little question that this one is the right one.

. Time Out New York
City Travel Guides > Books > Time Out Travel
by: Keith Mulvihill
2006-02
Time Out New York (TONY) , which is updated annually, is a MUST for anyone visiting the city. The first chapter is a concise and fascinating history of New York, outlining important events throughout its vast history. Proceeding through this indespensible guidebook, you'll find detailed information about where to stay, eat, and drink, and the places and events not to miss in each neighborhood of the vibrant city. Because the guide is written by locals, the recommendations and warnings are pertinent and current from people "in the know," who astutely guide residents and visitors through the maze that would be overwhelming without this terrific guide. Each place listed also has address, phone, and often websited listed, as well as prices and review. The maps ... Read More:
