Being someone who loves motorcycles, travel, and thought Long Way Round was awesome, this book was already high on my list. I saw the one time showing of the Long Way Down movie and I am currently watching the full series on the Fox Reality Channel. I love this stuff!

So why didn't the book get five stars? Well, I think it suffered from being the second time around. It never felt quite as much of a seat of your pants adventure as Long Way Round did. I suppose it shouldn't since this is the second major trip and all the crew kind of know what they are doing. I also thought that having Ewan McGregor bring his wife along for part of the trip did change the dynamic of the trip, as you'll hear Charley Boorman say a few times. ... Read More:

Her books include PUB WATCHING with Desmond Morris, and PASSPORT TO THE PUB; The Tourist's Guide to Pub Etiquette. The book is witty in its analysis of the ways of English conversation and behaviour with its unwritten codes, and of weather-speak, reflex apology, ironic-gnome, money talk, and panaroid-pantomime rules which belie the underlying scholarship and serious study. some tips are interesting, but some I've heard before. The book had a difficult time keeping my interest since the entries are so short and unrelated in terms of organization.

Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell is a trippy field trip to both the exciting and the mundane locations along the way to three presidential assassinations--Abraham Lincoln's, James Garfield's, and William McKinley's. Vowell, the NPR commentator, is forthright in her disdain for our current president, analyzing her feelings against the backdrop of those just crazy enough to commit murder for their ideology. Vowell is humorous and her opinions are clear without being overwrought, but more than anything she is informative. She's fascinated by presidential history, and reveals details both obscure and eye-popping. I bought this book for good friends who were taking their first RV trip from Southern Missouri to New England! They used it from Day One - For food stops and even an emergency stop. They were so pleased with the book and I was glad to have chosen such a great gift!

I bought this for a 70 yr old friend who had suddenly taken an enormous interest in Costa Rica, and who was seriously thinking she wanted to go there. So I surprised her with this as a gift. I have to admit that I had an ulterior motive: at her age and level of physical abilities, I believed she would not be able to participate in all the loveliness and would likely find such a trip too much for her to enjoy. But I did not want to deliver that disheartening message.

She read thru the book and thoroughly enjoyed it but realized on her own that other places and trips would be better for her to consider. Sad but true, so the book did it's job. The streets go every witchway and having this map that we could pull easily out of our pack was a lifesaver. If you don't have a car, the BART and MUNI maps were also handy. People on the street saw us using it and always chimed in with extra advice.
