This is just what I needed for a course I'm teaching. Lots of information in a compact form. Sometimes too compact, I need a magnifying glass for some maps, but it does the job.

This book is terrific. I can't stop reading it. It's like a fascinating trip through time, into the past forty years of life in America.

Book is very well conceived and the pictures, lay out, details, etc is outstanding. In that respect it is both a great "coffee table" addition or an useful dream or travel tool. Should highlight that the book is not confined to the usual travel destinations, which is a big big plus. With regards to the content which it is not as detailed as someone could expect I will point out that this is not a travel guide but a reference tool which I think does a great job at pointing out the "when" for a variety of travel options. My basic criticism is that although for the most part it does a very good job at explaining the rationale behind why a particular date is recommended for a given location, it does not consistently highlights other suitable periods of the ... I have yet to put the phrases to use but I feel more confident already...the phonetic pronunciation guides are very clear. The humor and variety make the book easy to read and become familiar with. Thanks also for the hints on manners and realistic expectations.

The book was of very little help when visiting Venice. Poor maps and confusing information. We had to get local maps and the book was useless.

Ignore the reviews laden with the white liberal guilt or the white liberal defensiveness. This book is about a struggling country that needs the money from the west to survive, yet at its heart wishes the west would just take its rude tourists and away. As tourists we refuse to see that we've created a new form of economic imperialism around the world, we really just want to get away from the cold and draining life we left at home. It is easier to close our eyes and claim that angry brown people are lazy, stupid or senseless. After all we gave them hotel jobs, cruise ships and casinos, how dare they be angry at us. I bought this book after finding it through a link somewhere. I'm interested in reading about what singles do to find love (although this is not my situation), and I liked the idea of learning more about Indian culture. This book was a big disappointment, however: in the end, I thought it was trashy.
