Certainly no one can question the courage or loyalty of Lt. Gen Moore or that of his co-writer Mr. Gallagher. However don't expect to read another Soldiers Once....this is a review of Gen Moore's return to Viet Nam. I'm not sure everyone would equivocate the North Vietnamese, with the troops of the American force as the General seems to do here. Whether we should forgive and forget, that they were just good ol' boys doing their job, would seem to me to be up to those who were there also to decide. It would seem that there would be those who are not willing to forget and forgive so easily as the General seems to do. However this should be recommended reading for any young person....well worth the time.

Eric Weiner's book is great. It's interesting to read the cultural differences between people all over the world. The world might getting flat, our opinion about the basics of life is not equal at all. The highlights of the book are his stories about his experiences in Iceland, Moldova and Bhutan. Possible Eric can add a part II: I am curious to read about Japan, Brazil and Jamaica. Apart from "pure-pleasure-to-read", you do learn some basic elements about happiness and being happy. This is a great first book to begin an understanding of Egypt before travel. It covers all major areas in extensive detail; provides suggestions for the best places to visit while in the country; detail pictures of what to look for at various sites;and the last section on travel tips I found invaluable. It is current (2008 ed) and I especially like the size of the book, which can be tucked into a carry-on bag or a back-pack while touring and doesn't weigh a ton. "Don't leave home without it!"

This book is especially good for those that wish to hike and find secret places. We did some of this - too hot for us in October! We found that we were flipping through the book to put things together. I would prefer to have each side of the island in one section. Also, there aren't maps in many of the sections, so you have to flip back to the maps when you are in a section, say adventure. Also, everyone and his brother has this book so the places aren't so secret any more. I would say it's a must unless you plan to stay in your condo or hotel and not venture out.

It's amazing that anyone would even attempt this... walking across Afganistan in the winter with a war going on. It is quite staggering, how many different ways he could die... war casualty, fights with officials, accidents, frostbite/exposure, starvation, food poisoning...

The desolate landscape is hard to envision, although the photos helped. How does one step forward in 4 feet of snow? Temperatures are cited well below zero at night, so besides unease provoked by well armed people he's sleeping with, how does he sleep with undoubtedly cold wet feet?

The descriptions do not bring the walk, the towns or the people alive. Abdul Haq was the only character drawn in a memorable way. Stewart comes to know others, be they guards, hosts ... Read More:
