Never having been to New York, this map was a really big help in navigating the City. It even helped before I left home by letting me see where my hotel was in relation to the places I wanted to see and how I would travel to see them.

We are planning a trip to Disney World with our children and grandchildren. I was told that this is the best book to read for planning such a trip. I agree. I bought it for us and also for our children. It is very complete and gives information for all levels of budget. I especially liked the "tips" included for each category. I would suggest that anyone planning such a trip get this book before doing anything else.

This fabulous account of getting on the train in London (the decrepit Orient Express) and riding trains across Asia as far east as Japan, then looping back to Europe on the Trans-Siberian, is not a bit dated, even though it was first published in 1975. Theroux is sometimes cross and prickly, but he doesn't miss a thing, and he ventures into places (and eats things) that most people never would. Because he is also a novelist, he's deft at limning the appearances and characters of the people he meets, and these people, who are variously vain, odd, smelly, crazy, foolish, bigoted, or just eccentric, give this travelogue--and indeed all of Theroux's travel narratives--the quality of a Dickens novel. There is nothing I can say that would do any justice as to how great this book is. It was everything you could possibly hope for in an ethnographic text. You learn a lot about a culture very different from ours and it is truly just fascinating!

We went to Ireland last year for the first time and loved it so much, we are going again this year. We purchased this book as well as another guidebook. This one is fabulous -- very well thought out and organized - you can tell he really knows what he is talking about -- this is the one that we will bring with us -- he even tells you when and how to drive the Dingle Peninsula to avoid the tourist buses -- does not give you too much information. He has a very honest and down to earth approach which makes for an informative and interesting read!

Great travel book that underscores the need to travel light, both in terms of physical and mental baggage, in order to truly explore the world. The author shares lots of anectdotes that illustrate the value in straying from the beaten path, while explaining how to do so safely. This book is an excellent resource for students at teachers alike. It has a great balance of different map types and the level of detail is beyond anything I have ever seen in any other atlas. If you're taking Geography or any class about Regions and Nations in the world, this is the book for you.

I purchased this book for my first trip overseas. The information was accurate, easy to read and has become a great resource even after my trip for labelling my pictures etc. Rick's recommendations and advice for places to eat, sleep and visit were all without fault. I read the book from cover to cover before I left home and even on a couple of unplanned walks I was able to say "hang on a minute, these's something we need to see near here, I've read about it in the book". Sure enough we were one block away from about 4 sights and we saw them all.

Rick's museum tours were made so much easier with photos of works of art worth seeing and the descriptions were perfect for my previous lack of art appreciation. I would recommended the book to anyone planning a ... Read More:
