This is a very well written, organized book for anyone planning to travel to Alaska by cruise ship. It contains very helpful information comparing cruise lines, also. I highly recommend this book.

We're back from three weeks in Hawaii where we visited Maui and Oahu and Kauai - one week on each island. This is the excellent guide that made our holiday so rewarding with all its good to do's and not to do's. We saved by renting our own snorkeling equipment and following the directions to their recommeded beach zones. Same for kayaking. Their Wikiwiki Phonebook in the back pages held all the necessary numbers and our hotel allowed free local calls. We experienced total tropicland immersion and so many "oh wow's".

Attention to detail - that's what separates this from the rest. My wife and I have been to this region dozens of times, and already knew much of what's here, yet we still bought this for its depth and for the gems it has that we'd missed. Lesser-known yet still outstanding locations are included, not just the "name" places. Time of day, trail and road conditions, suggestions on that extra item of gear [or lens] to take for each place, it's all here. The author's "here's my experience of the place" approach makes it that much more readable, too. The combination of sample color photos, time required data and geographic grouping make it easy to plan your visit. This book _really_ "rocks"!

Richard Proenneke's journals from 1974 - 1980 detail everyday life at Twin Lakes Alaska. From the daily adventures of hiking and filming wildlife to the more mundane chores of chopping firewood, and making sourdough pancakes, Dick reveals his everyday life in the wilderness. Dick's prose is surprisingly easy to read for a daily journal, and entertaining. He easily transports the reader to the wilderness, and all its beauty, danger, and tranquility. A more sanguine aspect as the journal unfolds is the eventual encroachment by Man, stayed somewhat by the National Park status of the region. This guidebook was perfect. It included all the information you would want to know visiting Yosemite. The pictures are beautiful and give you a great idea of what is to come. I think his descriptions of the trails were very accurate and helped make my trip to Yosemite perfect. I am going to buy all his books!!

This book was difficult for me to rate, since it is really a compilation of three separate books into one volume. The first two books I would give 3/5 stars, while the third book (the one actually entitled "Coming Into the Country") is superb and deserves 5 stars. Thus, my averaged 4-star rating.

I found the first two books very interesting and readable, but they tended to delve off into a more philosophical orientation describing the history of Alaska, which I deemed long-winded at times. The third book, however, kept my attention perked and was just what I was hoping for when I purchased this book -- a look into the life of an Alaskan bushman -- since it was told through stories of people the author meets along the way during his long ... This guide worked great. If you email the author (email address in the guide), he'll send you updates.

Came with detailed maps, turn-by-turn directions for both eastbound and westbound driving, and points of interest. Guide has a spiral binding and just the right size for use on a road trip.

This guide made for a great, unforgettable, 3 week road trip during May/June 2008.

No need to beat around the sage brush: this book is fantastic. The funny passages are falling-down funny (the story of the coyote, the cat that fell asleep in a mine shaft, getting "lost" in a snow storm, the mad minister in Hawaii -- on and on it goes). But the bulk of the pleasure this book delivers, in my estimate, lies in Twain's brilliant descriptions -- and they're also a good part of the humor. Partly because behind Twain's humor there often seems to lie a sadness -- and at times a touch of cynicism. When he describes beauty, such as the sunrise over a layer of clouds from the top of a volcano in Maui, he forgets himself, and seems happy.
